The successful candidate will excel at working in a community that is broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation and religion. BPI is nationally recognized for its innovative model of academic inclusion. One of the most rigorous and effective college-in-prison programs in the country, BPI is now extending its radical intervention in educational inequity outside of prison through two other full-scholarship degree programs: the Bard Microcollege and BardBac.
Responsible for faculty management, the Assistant Dean ensures that BPI prioritizes diversity, equity, and inclusion in faculty recruitment and retention; that its curriculum represents the breadth of the liberal arts and sciences; and that its academic policies and standards are consistent across campuses. This position reports to the Dean of BPI and is located in the BPI office on the Bard College campus in Annandale-on-Hudson.
Key Responsibilities
- Faculty recruitment, hiring, and evaluation
- Faculty communication
- Course planning and approval
- Assessment, revision, and implementation of academic policy, as needed
- Participation in admissions and commencement
- Participation in summer Residency
- Collaboration with BPI colleagues who direct specific academic programs and campuses
- Communication with BPI faculty and academic offices of Bard College
- Teaching one course each semester, fall and spring
- Commitment to BPI’s mission of defying expectations of who college is for and where it might lead
- Terminal degree in a discipline within the liberal arts and sciences
- Demonstrated excellence in college teaching
- Additional college administrative experience welcome but not required
- Exceptional organizational and planning skills
- Experience managing collaborative projects
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Comfort using a database
- Ability to be cleared as a volunteer by the NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (candidates who don’t know whether they can obtain clearance should not be discouraged from applying)
- Must be able to sit for extended periods of time and work in standard office environment;
- Must be able to occasionally lift 20 pounds;
- Must be able to work occasional weekends and evenings as needed.
