Bard Early Colleges (BECs) are founded on the belief that many high school–age students are eager and ready for the intellectual challenges of a college education. Bard Early Colleges act on this belief by providing younger scholars with a tuition-free, credit-bearing college course of study in the liberal arts and sciences following the 9th and 10th grades. Students are taught by college faculty and have the opportunity to earn up to 60 college credits and an associate in arts (A.A.) degree from Bard College, concurrently with a high school diploma. Bard Early Colleges begin preparing students for college work as early as the 9th grade and offer ongoing guidance and academic support.
Now in its third decade, the Bard Early College network serves over 3,300 students in campuses in The Bronx, Lower Manhattan, Queens, and Hudson, New York; Newark, New Jersey; New Orleans, Louisiana; Cleveland, Ohio; Washington, D.C.; and Baltimore, Maryland. Since 2003, Bard College has awarded more than 5,500 A.A. degrees to its early college students.
About Bard High School Early College Manhattan Campus
The Bard High School Early College Manhattan campus is a screened New York City public high school located on the Lower East Side. A unique partnership between Bard College and the NYC Department of Education (NYDOE), BHSEC seeks to provide a rigorous course of study that emphasizes thinking through writing, discussion, and inquiry. This alternative to the traditional high school is founded on the belief that many young people are ready and eager to do serious college work at age sixteen. Based on the premise that these young adults' ambition to learn must be taken seriously, BHSEC's four-year program enables highly motivated students to earn a New York State high school Regents diploma and a tuition-free Bard College associate's degree in four years.
