The CCS Bard Hessel Museum of Art, at Bard College, is offering an exciting opportunity for an experienced museum professional. The Hessel Museum is part of the Center for Curatorial Studies, which includes a Graduate Program in Curatorial Studies, a comprehensive Library and Archives, and a collection of contemporary art from the 1960s to the present. The Museum Registrar is a member of the collections and exhibitions management team that oversees the physical and intellectual stewardship of the fine arts collections at the Center for Curatorial Studies, Hessel Museum of Art, and Bard College, as well as an ambitious exhibition program that supports and aligns with the Center for Curatorial Studies graduate program.
As the custodians of the prestigious Marieluise Hessel Collection, the Museum Registrar supports the Head of Collections and Registration in the maintenance and care of the Hessel Collection, as well as the increasingly growing CCS Bard Collection. Under the supervision of the Head of Collections and Registration, and in coordination with the Director of Exhibitions and Operations, the Museum Registrar, will also oversee the organization of exhibition logistics, temporary loans to the museum, as well as the documentation of all transactions, movement, and maintenance of objects according to professional museum standards.
- Assists the Head of Collections and Registration in the maintenance of the CCS Bard Hessel Museum’s collections, including preservation, conservation, information and legal documentation management, rights and reproductions, environmental and risk management, and all matters related to the safeguarding of the museum’s collection and loans.
- Organizes logistics related to the shipment of incoming and outgoing works from the collection and temporary loans to exhibitions, including courier arrangements, as required
- Assists Head of Collections and Registration on large projects including the processing of large donations and acquisitions, conservation and rehousing projects, inventory checks and audits, and art storage maintenance
- In coordination with the Director of Exhibitions and Operations, communicates directly with lenders, partners, and artists regarding loans and new commissions for exhibitions, including the preparation and review of loan agreements, reviewing and communicating installation instructions and requirements to Director of Exhibitions and Operations and Head Preparator, issuing certificates of insurance, and any other legal documents as required
- Contributes to the development and management of exhibition budgets with the Head of Collections and Registration and Director of Exhibitions and Operations
- In coordination with the Head Preparator, sets job assignments and directs daily activity of art installation crew to meet installation priorities
- Works directly with CCS Bard graduate students on annual projects and thesis exhibitions, including acquiring shipping estimates and assisting them with their budgets, negotiating loans and contracts, communicating and coordinating with lenders and artists
- Collaborates directly with the Security Manager on the maintenance and implementation of proper conditions of storage and exhibition spaces according to professional museum standards and lender requirements
- Creates, maintains, and ensures accuracy of records in the collection database TMS and the online collections software eMuseum
- Oversees and coordinates insurance for temporary loans directly with insurance provider; works with Head of Collections and Registration on annual insurance renewals
- Writes and prepares condition reports for works to and from the collection as well as temporary loans to exhibitions
- Occasional assistance with packing, handling, and installation of works of art from collections and temporary loans
- Acts as courier for outgoing loans from collection, as required, to ensure proper handling and installation of works of art
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Bachelor's Degree in Art, Art History, Museum Studies, Arts Administration or closely related field (completion of graduate program in Museum Studies strongly preferred) and three (3) years of professional museum registration experience (art museum experience preferred), or a combination of education and experience.
- Experience managing domestic and international fine art shipping arrangements.
- Thorough understanding of art museum standards and protocols.
- Thorough knowledge of current registration practices and principles; preventative maintenance of collections and experience in working with contemporary art and new media.
- Excellent working knowledge of software such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel) and museum collection databases. TMS and eMuseum experience preferred.
- Ability to handle delicate works of art with extreme care.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with museum staff, vendors, visitors, artists, donors, and representatives of borrowing or lending museums.
- Must be able to sit for extended periods of time and work in standard office environment
- Must be able to occasionally lift 20 pounds
- Must be able to work occasional weekends and evenings as needed
