Dean for Inclusive ExcellenceReporting to the Vice President for Academic Inclusive Excellence, the dean coordinates institutional initiatives and strategic planning in collaboration and at the direction of the VP that includes student support and leadership development, hiring practices for staff and faculty, campus-wide programming related to equity, diversity and inclusion and trainings for all constituents. The dean co-chairs the Council on Inclusive Excellence with the VP for Academic IE and the VP for Student Affairs to coordinate planning. The Council is a campus-wide committee that includes faculty, staff and students and is responsible for coordinating the development of student and staff orientation and training, student leadership development, campus-wide initiatives, curricular and faculty development and campus climate assessment as it pertains to diversity and inclusion.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides leadership for the Council on Inclusive Excellence to coordinate and guide the agenda for the working groups and identify CIE’s initiatives on an annual basis. Develops programs and projects in coordination with campus stakeholders including but not limited to: student government, clubs and organizations, the dean of student affairs, student activities, wellness, center for civic engagement, faculty houses, dean of the college and human resources.
- Coordinates Gilson Place programming, a collaborative space dedicated to students of color which hosts programming in consultation with the Multicultural Diversity Committee, a student government sub-committee.
- In collaboration with the Office of Access & Equity Programs and under the guidance of the VP for Academic IE, the dean coordinates student support services that connect resources across the campus.
- Partners with the director of Equity and Access to develop leadership, orientation and academic support structures for students in Bard’s various scholarships with a particular focus on supporting Pell Eligible students.
- Collaborates with Bard Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) to create student opportunities around the local community and beyond along with the development of post-graduate opportunities.
- Assesses on-campus diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, especially those related to staff and student success while coordinating with the VP for Academic Inclusive Excellence on faculty or curricular initiatives.
- Conducts campus-wide trainings for students, staff and faculty in coordination with relevant stakeholders.
- Provides programming and staff development for traditionally underrepresented staff in collaboration with Human Resources and the VP for Administration.
- Advises senior leadership on strategies related to funding, student development and retention.
- Supervises post-baccalaureate position focused on student programming.
- Education: Masters degree required; a terminal degree preferred.
- Work Experience: 5-7 years of experience with advanced leadership responsibilities in either college level inclusion positions or college access programs.
Excellent training and facilitation skills; ability to coordinate and collaborate across multiple offices and student groups; knowledge of project management; demonstrated ability to implement new initiatives; experience working with senior leadership; knowledge and experience in diversity and inclusion programs; excellent organization and communication skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks, projects and programs. The Dean of Inclusive must exhibit high emotional intelligence—flexibility and active listening skills—in order to continue as well as initiate equitable approaches to diversity at Bard.
