Biography:
David Szlasa is an artist and designer whose work—ranging from scenic design and video art to the construction of tiny solar-powered art studios—is rooted in a commitment to social and ecological sustainability. He is the recipient of the Isadora Duncan Award for Design, Gerbode Award for Choreographers in Collaboration, Lighting Artists in Dance Award, and grants from, among others, the Rainin Foundation, Zellerbach Family Foundation, and Center for Cultural Innovation. Recent design projects include What Remains, produced by Bard’s Fisher Center; /peh-LO-tah/, presented by BAM Next Wave and Kennedy Center; Nobody Lives Here Now, presented by Yerba Buena Center for the Arts; Between Me and the Other World, presented by the Black Choreographers Festival, San Francisco; and Language of Dreams at JazzFest Berlin. Select public art projects include RANGE STUDIO, a mobile public art project and micro residence center, launched at the Yerba Buena Center; break / tradition, a crowd-sourced video remix of “Tradition” from Fiddler on the Roof, exhibited at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco and available online at 3200stories.org; and the Nano Project, an art intervention with the Geissler Research Group in Theoretical Chemistry at the University of California at Berkeley. Szlasa previously served as lecturer in art practice at Stanford University; lecturer in dance design and production at Saint Mary’s College of California; and lecturer in design at the Playwrights Horizons Theater School at NYU.
