Farah Al Qasimi

Visiting Assistant Professor of Photography

Primary Academic Program: Photography

Biography:

Farah Al Quasimi is a photographer and native of the United Arab Emirates who received her BA and MA degrees from Yale University. She is known for her photographs of life in the Persian Gulf and for 2020’s Back and Forth Disco, a series of photographs that were installed on 100 bus shelters throughout New York City as a project for the Public Art Fund. The New Yorker profiled the project in its January 30, 2020 issue: “Farah Al Qasimi Brings Jubilation to New York City Bus Routes.” She was one of four photographers featured in a New York Times feature, “The American Road Trip Tradition” (October 28, 2019). Her work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, MIT List Visual Arts Center, Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, Art Jameel in Dubai, and New York University’s Grey Art Gallery. Recent solo exhibitions include Brotherville, Wayne State University; Open Arm Sea, Houston Center for Photography; Arrival, The Third Line, Dubai; Funhouse, Helena Anrather, New York. Her work has also been part of group shows at venues in Lahore, London, Toronto, Los Angeles, and Abu Dhabi, among others. She is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, including Light Work Residence, Syracuse; Aaron Siskind Foundation Individual Photographer’s Grant; NADA Artadia Award, New York; and Delfina Foundation Residency, London. She has served as a visiting lecturer or critic in photography at Pratt Institute, Rhode Island School of Design, New York University Steinhardt School, and Dubai’s Higher Colleges of Technology.
