Biography:
Andrew Vielkind’s research interests include avant-garde and experimental cinema, postwar art, new media, and media archaeology. His PhD dissertation at Yale University explores the intersections between experimental cinema practices during the Cold War period and theories of information, communication, and cybernetics. His publications include the book chapter “Ernie Gehr’s Side/Walk/Shuttle: Panorama of an Invisible City,” in On the Viewing Platform: The Panorama between Canvas and Screen (Yale University Press, 2020); the catalogue essays “Wolfgang Tillmans: Chronology,” coauthored with Phil Taylor, in Wolfgang Tillmans exhibition catalogue, Museum of Modern Art, forthcoming 2022; and “Eduardo Kac’s Reabracadabra,” in Museum Research Consortium Dossier 7, Museum of Modern Art, forthcoming 2021. He is the recipient of numerous grants and fellowships, including the Mellon-Marron Research Consortium Fellowship, Museum of Modern Art; ACLS/Luce Dissertation Fellowship in American Art; Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library Research Fellowship; and other travel and research grants from Yale. He has made presentations at, among others, the Society for Cinema and Media Studies Annual Conference, Mellon-Marron Research Consortium Study Sessions Symposium at MoMA, Hofstra University, University of Toronto, and University of Pittsburgh on subjects including “Bridging Inner and Outer Space: Experimental Cinema at the 1958 World’s Fair”; “Colonizing the Imagination: Apollo 11 and the 1960s Avant-Garde,” and “Stan Brakhage and the Anthropology of Communication.”BA, chemistry and film, Johns Hopkins University; MA, humanities and media studies, University of Chicago; PhD, history of art and film and media studies, Yale University.
