Je Christine: A Medieval Woman in Her Own Words
CHRISTINE DE PIZAN (1364 - c.1431) produced overforty works, including collections of more than four hundred
ballades which were popular as live entertainment at the court of
the Duke of Orleans. She authored colorful allegories in support
of women’s worth and was involved in a debate concerning The
Romance of the Rose, a popular book which she considered to be
misogynistic. She cleverly enlisted the support of the Queen of
France as insurance against retaliation by powerful clerics who
opposed her views on the book. Her public participation in the
debate secured her position as an important scholarly voice.
The text of Je Christine is taken almost entirely from Christine’s
writings, compiled and translated by Suzanne Savoy, with only
brief additions from other historical sources to add context of time
and place. The play is, in essence, Christine’s own retrospective
of her life and works and only hints at the depth and breadth of her
literary oeuvre.
