Bard Globalization & International Affairs Program Presents
Michelle Murray: The Struggle for Recognition in International Relations
Thursday, October 10, 2019
Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs, 170 E 64th St, New York, NY 10065
6:00 pm – 7:30 pm EDT/GMT-4
With The Struggle for Recognition in International Relations, Michelle Murray offers a new answer to a perennial question in the field: how can established powers manage the peaceful rise of new great powers? Murray argues that power transitions are principally social phenomena whereby rising powers struggle to obtain recognition as world powers.6:00 pm – 7:30 pm EDT/GMT-4
Her book examines a moment at the turn of the 20th century, when two rising states—the United States and Imperial Germany—looked to the established powers to recognize their status. Only one would succeed in securing a peaceful power transition.
What can Murray’s framework teach us about the social dynamics of power transitions? How can it help us to understand the economic and military rivalry between United States and China?
Michelle Murray is director of global initiatives and associate professor of political studies at Bard College.
She will be in conversation with:
Stephen Pampinella, assistant professor in the department of political science and international relations at the State University of New York at New Paltz.
