In this artist talk, Song-Ming Ang speaks about his interdisciplinary art practice and its underlying concerns, as well as ruminations on the potentials and limitations of art. Ang looks back at several artworks and projects over his last decade of art practice, including collaborations with other artists, projects involving public participation, and his presentation at the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019 for the Singapore Pavilion.Song-Ming Ang (Singapore/Berlin) makes art focusing on how we relate to music individually and as a society. Drawing from the everyday and popular culture, Ang creates objects and encounters in various formats. In his work, music often serves as an entry point into other areas, like how fans and amateurs generate alternative forms of knowledge, and how structures and processes in experimental music may inform self-organisation and democracy.
Ang holds an M.A. in Aural & Visual Cultures from Goldsmiths University of London. He has presented works with The High Line (New York, US), Camden Arts Centre (London, UK), Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin, DE), Künstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin, DE), Witte de With (Rotterdam, NL), Museum Voorlinden (Wassenaar, NL), Museum of Contemporary Art (Sydney, AU), 3rd Singapore Biennale (2011), 14th Istanbul Biennial (2015), and 4th Aichi Triennale (2019).
Introduced by Junni Chen and Guy Weltchek, Graduate Students, CCS Bard.
CCS Bard Speaker Series Each semester CCS Bard hosts a program of lectures by leading artists, curators, art historians, and critics, situating the school and museum’s concerns within the larger context of contemporary art production and discourse. Speakers are selected primarily by second-year graduate students and also by faculty and staff. All lectures are free and open, and will also be documented through audio recordings that reside in the CCS Bard Library & Archives. This semester, some talks will be in-person and others will be online. In order to receive a zoom link, registration is required in advance on eventbrite here.
