What is the impact of government deficits on the economy? This question can befuddle even the most experienced policymaker.
The Economic Democracy Initiative's session on "Macroeconomic Tools for Policymaking" will provide students with a simple macroeconomic framework for examining the relationship between the financial position of the government and private sectors. We will review case studies of individual countries and open new ways of thinking about public finance.
Learning outcomes include: understanding basic macroeconomic accounting and the relationship between deficits and surpluses across the economy; and examining the constraints and opportunities different monetary systems operate within.
