wasted country: Music theater loosely adapted from TS Eliot by Nico and the Navigators in English
Thursday, March 30, 2023 – Tuesday, April 4, 2023
Radialsystem
This musical theatre production is organized by Radialsystem in partnership with JUGENDKULTURKARTE Berlin. Performances take place in English at Holzmarktstraße 33, 10243 Berlin. With their scenic-musical revision of the famous poem "The Waste Land" by TS Eliot - which triggered standing ovations as a spoken-word performance in 2022 - Nico and the Navigators celebrate their premiere at the Radialsystem at the end of March. In doing so, they show the enduring validity of a poetically condensed time display that was created at the end of the First World War. Under the impression of the "Spanish flu", the important poet and playwright described the meaningless existence of modern man in a devastated environment. The poem deals with crises that are frighteningly topical: wars, drought catastrophes and economic depression. Against this background, the music theater is looking for a common future and seduces its audience to meaningful community in art.
At the same time, Wasted Land takes a critical look at Eliot's biography and thus also asks about the role of intellectuals in political debates. The poet Norbert Hummelt will introduce the evenings and read excerpts from his current translation of "The Waste Land".
