Punishing Russians Won’t End the Ukraine War, Writes Professor Ian Buruma in the Washington Post
“Economic punishment almost never has the desired effect of bringing down a tyranny or stopping violent aggression,” writes Ian Buruma, Paul W. Williams Professor of Human Rights and Journalism at Bard, observing that sanctions against Russia have not stopped Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine. Drawing parallels to the practice of bombing civilians during World War II and the War in Vietnam, Buruma adds, “If anything, shared hardship tends to rally people around a common enemy and strengthen support for their leaders.”
