News for Bard
Families & Friends

Dear Families,

Happy New Year and greetings from a snowy Annandale.

The Citizen Science program kicked off this week with the Class of 2027 arriving back on campus on Tuesday and classes beginning yesterday. Started 13 years ago, Citizen Science is designed to give all students the tools, attitudes, and motivation to use science and mathematics concepts in their daily lives to be informed citizens on the issues of our times.

This year’s topic, the science of water, tackles urgent, present-day questions related to water and specifically the safety of drinking water. Students will consider in what ways social, historical, and political factors are at work even when we think we are engaged in “objective” science and explore the properties of water, as well as how these properties influence the contamination (and decontamination) of drinking water. Of course they will be enjoying many activities planned by the Dean of Students office, such as karaoke, craft night, bingo, roller skating, hangouts with therapy dogs, and more. Follow @Bard_OSA and @bard_citizen_science for daily updates on Instagram or the Citizen Science Facebook page.

The first day of Spring classes begins on Monday, January 29. Be sure to check out the calendar below my message for the list of upcoming important dates. We look forward to seeing all students back on campus at the end of the month. It's been too quiet around here.

February 10, 2024 starts the year of the Wood Dragon, according to the Chinese zodiac. I invite you to celebrate with the director of Bard’s US-China Music Institute, Jindong Cai, as he conducts The Orchestra Now (TŌN). Now in its fifth year, The Sound of Spring is an authentic Chinese New Year concert featuring world-class Chinese instrument soloists presenting festive Chinese music specially selected to welcome in the Lunar New Year. Click here to purchase tickets for either venue.

Saturday, February 10 at 3 PM at the Bard College Fisher Center
Sunday, February 11 at 3 PM at the Rose Theater, Jazz at Lincoln Center, NYC.

It is always a pleasure to speak with our Bard families, if I can be of help, please reach out.

Warm wishes,
Sasha Boak-Kelly
Senior Director of Development

P.S. A heartfelt thank you to all who included Bard in your giving plans in 2023! Every contribution matters, and it's never too soon to start planning for the 2024 tax year. Please think about making a gift in 2024 to help support Bard students.

The Lives They Lived: Wyatt Mason Writes about Cormac McCarthy for the New York Times Magazine

Wyatt Mason, writer in residence at Bard College and contributing writer for the New York Times magazine, writes about Cormac McCarthy’s tough-guy persona in a series looking back at some of the artists, innovators, and thinkers who died in 2023. “In a profile in the New York Times magazine of the era [of All the Pretty Horses],” Mason writes, “McCarthy talks about venomous snakes and grizzly bears, as though he had briefly descended from horseback before riding off into the evening redness. But as with most great writers, the essential truth was plainer: He was a nerd for the art.”

Inside Higher Ed: Bard Among Those “Tackling the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict in the Classroom”

Michelle Murray, chair of the Division of Social Studies and associate professor of political studies, spoke with Inside Higher Ed about the efforts she and other Bard professors are taking in response to student demand for courses about the conflict in Gaza. “I was observing students, on the one hand, being really hungry for knowledge and, on the other hand, kind of encountering a lot of terminology that’s circulating around in the discourse,” Murray said. This led to the creation of the course “Keywords for Our Times: Understanding Israel and Palestine,” which has 40 students enrolled—larger than the typical class size at Bard.
