December 2023 Triangle
Issue 168

Dear Bardian,

I hope you are well. The year 2023 is almost wrapped, done and dusted, but things never really stop in Annandale.

Over the winter break there will be 47 displaced students staying on campus and working in various offices like ours, and we are excited for a chance to get to know them. Citizen Science starts up again early next month, and there will be BardWorks networking receptions in Annandale on January 25th and in NYC on the 26th. Invitations to come.

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Bard Holiday Parties in NYC and LA this month. It was fab to be back with everyone in NYC, velvet and canapes. Thanks Caia Diepenbrock '15 for creating the new take on an old game, Bard Against Humanity, as a fundraiser—it's pretty funny! To learn more, check out Instagram here.

Also this month we published the Holiday Gift Guide online, thanks to the hard work of the Board of Governors Young Alumnx Committee. Please take a look and buy Bardian. In 2024 we will launch a full Bardian Business guide, so stay tuned.

We celebrated students who are finishing in December with a special brunch featuring alumni/ae speaker Dr. Brianna Norton ’00–thanks Brianna for coming back to inspire students.

When January hits, we will be speeding towards the 2024 Alumni/ae Reunion Weekend, and time will move very fast, especially if you are in reunion. 4s and 9s. Save the date: May 24th-26th. And there has never been a better time to make a reunion giftwe have an $84,000 match!

So that's it from me for another year. I have had a great time meeting Bardians everywhere—both online and in person. Thank you for your questions, ideas, and support.

Please stay in touch with me and with each other. We are Bardian and Proud of you.

Be seeing you,

Jane ’89

P.S. If you missed the Friendship and Politics Hannah Arendt Center Conference, you can watch the sessions here. I highly recommend listening to Niobe Way on The Crisis of Friendships: Its Roots, Consequences, and Solutions. Her research is fascinating.

Visiting Artist in Residence Tschabalala Self ’12 on Creating Nicki Minaj’s Digital Vogue Cover

Tschabalala Self ’12, visiting artist in residence at Bard, talks about being asked to do a portrait of Nicki Minaj for Vogue’s December digital cover—using photographer Norman Jean Roy’s cover shoot as a starting point. “I do not usually delve too deeply into realism,” she says, “so by working on this project, I realized something I already suspected, which is that a portrait is more about capturing someone’s aura, as opposed to their appearance.”

Early College Model Jump-Starts Students’ Educational Careers, Writes Dumaine Williams ’03 for Education Reform Now

“Many of us who work closely with adolescents ... are familiar with framing the importance of education for young people as ‘Your main job is to be a student,’ or a similar sentiment,” writes Dumaine Williams ’03, vice president for student affairs and vice president and dean of Early Colleges at Bard, for Education Reform Now. Williams says this likening to a career is no mistake, and that “similar to career decisions, our individual educational pathways significantly impact our lives.” The early college model, pioneered by the Bard Early Colleges, has proven to jump-start students’ educational careers, Williams argues, improving graduation rates and reducing costs.
