Dear Eden,

So Reunion and Commencement 2026 are done and dusted! It was historic, epic and amazing.

One of my favorite events is the iconic and boisterous Senior Dinner. That's before all the guests get here; just students, faculty and staff, celebrating the end of the year and each other. It's the one where you might get an award. (In years gone by, Adolfas Mekas would break out the homemade limoncello! Does anyone remember that?)

This year we had almost 700 seated for dinner in a tent in Blithewood. I think mine was in Kline, but I can't remember who was the 1989 Senior Dinner speaker?

And the award goes to….

There was so much positivity in the room and support for each other, screaming and yelling when their friends got an award. The arts faculty table had a bubble machine, Rebecca Yoshino, farm Manager and educator, read the poem “Another World is Possible” by Rowen White, and Jane Smith, continuing assistant orofessor of humanities and associate director for library writing support, (famous for her “Shut up and SPROJ” sessions) gave her top 10 pieces of advice for graduating seniors.*

On Friday, we had the Bard College Awards Dinner and Ceremony, this year back under the big tent. Congratulations to all of our awardees #bardianandproud: Audrey Lasher Smith ’78, Olivia B. Carino, Youssef Kerkour ’00, Amy Bernard ’91, Matthew DeGennaro ’96, Kevin Barbosa ’18, Eva-Marie Quinones ’17, Imran Ahmed ’02, Pulitzer-prize winning author Marilynne Robinson and retiring professor of computer science Sven Anderson. You can read about all of the awardees on our website or watch the whole ceremony on YouTube.

Congratulations to the Class of 2026—Welcome to the Alumni/ae Association! There were actually three graduations over the weekend: Simon's Rock on Friday, for the first time at the Massena Campus in Barrytown; the Graduate Degrees Commencement at the Fisher Center on Saturday morning; and the Undergraduate Degrees Commencement in the afternoon. Special shout out to our two Alumni/ae Honorary Degree recipients: Jack Blum ’62 and Katy Stein ’66. Commencement speaker Fareed Zakaria talked about HI vs AI and was gracious enough to give the Alumni/ae Association his pre-game hot takes.

If you want to meet current Bard students and feel the campus vibe for yourself, come back for Family and Alumni/ae Weekend in the fall: October 23–25, 2026. You can take classes, tour everything new and connect with the next generation of Bardians!

And the next generation of Bard is only possible because of supporters like you. Tomorrow is Giving Day, and we’re aiming for 207 donors in honor of our founder, John Bard, on what would have been his 207th birthday. Every gift helps ensure future Bardians can learn, create, question, and lead.

Be seeing you,

Jane Brien '89

*The one I remembered is to write one letter a year, on paper and put it in the mail. Letters are my jam–and postcards too. I'm offering Bard swag to anyone who sends me a postcard this summer. Or let me know if you want a postcard from my vintage collection.

P.S.

PS. Thank you to all the reunion committee members who helped bring their classes together. Reunion next year is for 2s and 7s—if that is YOU—start making plans now—May 28-30th. We are looking for committee members and new ideas!
