Dear Bardian,
Thanks to everyone who came back to Bard for Alumni/ae Weekend and the Hudson Valley Cities Party. The fall is the best time to be in the HV, and you can take classes, tours, meet students, visit the Massena campus, peruse the Montgomery Place archival collection and see all the new stuff! Save the date for next year: October 23-25, 2026.
One of the best things about my job is meeting some of Bard's elders! Sometimes they visit us–thank you Bob Amsterdam ’53 for making the trip back to Annandale. We had a great time visiting the Fisher Center. Or I visit with them in their hometowns–like Arnold Davis '44, who is just about to celebrate his 102nd birthday. Arnold told me stories of being the head waiter in the dining room (Preston) where you had to wear a jacket and tie, and he would bring fresh baked bread to all the tables individually. I also spent time with Maurice Richter '53, professor and mentor to many Bardians; Marian E. Dunn ’60, clinical sexologist and grandparent of a current Bard student; and artist, sculptor, and professor Cynthia Gross Dantzic ’54.
Bard has touched the lives of many, and we want to hear about your unique journey! Please share your Bard Story with us and let us know how your time at Bard has influenced who you are today.
Last evening I was proud to be in the audience with so many other Bardians for Innovation and Legacy: An Anniversary Celebration with the Bard Conservatory Orchestra at Alice Tully Hall in NYC. Celebrating the Conservatory’s 20th anniversary and Leon’s 50th year as Bard College president, the evening featured Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and the North American premiere of Tan Dun’s Choral Concerto: Nine. There were over 100 current Bard students and alumni/ae on stage–it was absolutely incredible.
As we approach the holiday season, we are accepting submissions for this year's Bard Alumni/ae Gift Guide. If you would like to have your Bardian business information on our website, please fill out this form. We accept all types of products, services, publications, art, and more. This year, consider supporting other Bardians when you do your holiday shopping!
Save the date for Reunion weekend in Annandale, May 22-24, 2026. 1s and 6s, it’s your year, but everyone is invited!
Be seeing you soon,
Jane '89 |

Remember, remember the 4th of November. Early voting is happening now in most places. Send us your selfies, and we want to see your “I Voted” stickers. Email them to [email protected]. #bardianandvoting
And if you haven’t seen it yet, check out A Poll to Call Our Own: The Bard Voting Story, a short film chronicling Bard’s 25-year fight for student voting rights. With support from the Andrew Goodman Foundation and the NYCLU, Bard students and administrators won four lawsuits—three state and one federal—to secure local voting rights and a campus polling place.

BoG Stories
|
Every month a different member of the Board of Governors is asked to contribute to our Triangle newsletter. This month Nicole Katz '02 shares her Bard story.
|
|
It’s hard to believe it’s been 23 years since I graduated from Bard—I still feel the impact of that experience every day. Joining the Board of Governors has given me a fun peek behind the curtain at how the college runs—the thoughtfulness, creativity, and distinctly Bardian spirit behind every decision. Our work on the board is inspired by Bard’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of who college is for—and why a society full of critical thinkers has never been more essential. Bard continues to stand for expanding access and bringing true equity to education—something definitely worth cheering and supporting!

Arthur Tress ’62 Talked Cruising, Poetic Documentary, and His New Book of Photography, The Ramble, with Interview
For Interview magazine, writer and director Jordan Tannahill spoke with Bard alumnus Arthur Tress ’62 about his new book of photography, The Ramble. The book is a collection of photographs from the 1960s of an “overgrown stretch of Central Park that’s served as a cruising ground for gay men for nearly a century,” Tannahill writes. “I call it a sort of ‘poetic documentary,’” Tress said.

“Maps” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, with Bard Alum Nick Zinner ’96, Makes Rolling Stone List of Greatest Songs of the Century
Rolling Stone has named the song “Maps” by the band Yeah Yeah Yeahs, in which Bard alumnus Nick Zinner ’96 plays guitar and keyboard, as number two in their list of the 250 Greatest Songs of the Century So Far. “What remains in ‘Maps’ is pure feeling, so much so that the song has reappeared as musical inspiration for artists from Kelly Clarkson to Beyoncé over the years,” writes Rolling Stone about the band’s 2003 song. “Still, the original has held out strongest through the decades.”

Kenneth Stern ’75, Director of the Bard Center for the Study of Hate, Spoke About Anti-Semitism, Free Speech, and American Universities on College Matters
In a conversation with Jack Stripling on College Matters, a podcast produced by the Chronicle of Higher Education, Director of the Bard Center for the Study of Hate Kenneth Stern ’75 discussed what he saw as the “weaponization of the definition” of anti-Semitism that he helped to create. “I’m not ever saying don't combat speech or contest speech that you don’t like,” Stern said, “but I’m saying don’t use instruments of the state to suppress what teachers can teach and what students can hear.”
