Biographical / Historical

Julia Ann P. Herzberg is an art historian and independent curator living in New York City. Since 1990 she has curated more than twenty –five exhibitions in the United States and internationally. Herzberg has extensively researched the field of Latin American artists living in the United States and has made a particular contribution to their representation in the fields of art history and contemporary art exhibitions. She has cultivated a deep engagement researching, reviewing, and exhibiting a broad range of international and multidisciplinary artists including Wilfredo Lam, Leandro Katz, María Elena González, Iván Navarro, Liliana Porter, Raquel Rabinovich, Xu Bing, Navjot Altaf, Monica Bengoa, and Pepón Osorio, among others.

Herzberg was the Museum of Contemporary Hispanic Art curator for "The Decade Show" in 1990, a seminal exhibition focused on identity politics in art which developed over the previous decade. "The Decade Show" featured simultaneous venues at the New Museum of Contemporary art and The Studio Museum in Harlem. In 1991 she was the curator for the Official U.S. Representation for the third "International Biennial of Painting in Cuenca, Ecuador."

In 1998 Herzberg completed her PhD dissertation at the Graduate Center, City University of New York titled "Ana Mendieta: The Iowa Years, A Critical Study." She served as Consulting Curator at El Museo del Barrio from 1996 to 2001, as well as Consulting Curator for the Havana Biennials of 2003, 2006, and 2009. She also served as Adjunct Curator at the Patricia and David Frost Museum at Florida International Museum from 2008 until 2015.

Herzberg received two awards from the J. William Fulbright Scholarship Board; one in 2007 at Pontifical Catholic University in Santiago, Chile, where she taught a course on contemporary Latin American artists in the United States 2007, and another in 2013 at the Universidad Diego Portales, where she taught Latin American Artists in the United States from 1995: The Global and the Local. In Spring 2016 Herzberg served as Visiting Professor at The Institute of Art, Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaiso, Chile. She is currently a contributing and consulting editor for Arte al dia Internacional.
