To the Bard Community:
As you know from my message last week, Bard student Ali Faqirzada participated this afternoon in a virtual administrative hearing as part of his asylum application process. No problems were identified with his case, so it is moving forward to a final scheduling hearing on December 15, at which time a decision hearing on his asylum case will be scheduled, likely for early January.
Meanwhile, a federal judge in New Jersey is considering the merits of Ali's detention, and a decision is expected soon on whether he will remain in detention or will be released.
I just received a Thanksgiving message from Ali's family that I would like to share with you: "Thank you for standing with Ali and for standing with us during one of the most difficult periods of our lives. Your support, your prayers, your calls, your advocacy, and your presence have meant more than words can ever express. Even in this challenging time, Ali feels the strength of your kindness and solidarity. As his family, we also feel uplifted knowing that we are not alone, that we have a community that cares, that shows up, and that continues to fight for justice and compassion."
Thank you all for what you have done to support Ali and his family during this difficult time. Ali's lawyers believe that the publicity and advocacy that has been raised on his behalf have been very helpful. Let's keep our attention focused on Ali's case until it comes hopefully to a positive conclusion.
Best,
