January 2024 Triangle
Issue 169

Dear Alumni/ae,

Happy New Year from Annandale. I hope it is off to a good start. I have been enjoying having my son home after his first semester of “Begin in Berlin.” So happy to be beginning a Bard legacy.

He's been loving it—best decision he ever made to spend his first year there. From growing up on a small country road where you can't even walk to a shop, to living in one of the most exciting cities in the world. I'm looking forward to visiting him for spring break in March to see for myself. If you are interested, the BCB Insta is great.

Thank you to everyone who made a gift at the end of the year—we are still opening envelopes. A special thanks to anyone who wrote me a little message—very much appreciated. You know who you are.

January means BardWorks is back. BardWorks 2024 is happening January 24th-26th. We are inviting alumni/ae (you!) to networking receptions with students in Annandale and NYC. Please sign up if you want to help the next generation of Bardians launch out of Annandale!

And BardWorks DC coming in March will be announced soon. Please let us know if you would like to get involved.

Alumni/ae Reunion Weekend is around the corner so all 4s and 9s, save the date May 24th-26th. Make your plans now, and, there's never been a better time to make your reunion gift because we have a match: $84,000—and we are almost halfway there!

The Bard Observer is back, too, in a beautiful broadsheet. This issue includes articles about the highly contentious race for Speaker of the Student Body and the case for a new constitution, Jonathan Richman's recent show at SMOG, alumnus Matt Taibbi's (‘92) talk on campus and Bernard Iddings Bell Bard's Godfather of the Postmodern Revolt. There's lonely hearts, reviews, interviews and cartoons. I'm working on getting an alumni/ae subscription option.

You can also sign up for WXBC for some great music and to find out what is really going on on campus.

Stay cozy, stay curious,
Jane

P.S. Does anyone from the 1960's remember 'Office X' in the library?

The New York Times Profiles Jonathan Tunick ’58, “The EGOT Winner Behind Sondheim’s Signature Sound”

Listening to a demo of Stephen Sondheim’s “Losing My Mind” is a very different experience from the final product available on the original cast recording of the musical Follies. “What happened? The short answer: Jonathan Tunick,” writes Darryn King for the New York Times. In a profile of the career of Bard alumnus Jonathan Tunick ’58, King asked many experts what, exactly, an orchestrator does. For his part, Tunick refers to his work as “lighting for the ears.”

Nguyên Khôi Nguyễn ’04 for the New Yorker: “How to Disappear Your Partner’s Ugly Sweater”

Confronted with an ugly sweater this holiday season? Bard alumnus Nguyên Khôi Nguyễn ’04, artist and professor of digital media at Loyola University Maryland, is here to help. Nguyễn created a helpful cartoon for the New Yorker titled “How to Disappear Your Partner’s Ugly Sweater.” When subtle suggestions don’t do the trick, it’s time to escalate to novel solutions like “Capitalism” or “Self-Reflection.”

Gertrude’s, Restaurant Owned by Alumna Rachel Jackson ’11, Featured in the New York Times Top Eight New York City Dishes of 2023

Pete Wells, restaurant critic for the New York Times, says he “can’t find more than six layers on this seven-layer cake” available at Gertrude’s, a restaurant owned by Bard alumna Rachel Jackson ’11. Regardless, that didn’t stop Wells from naming Getrude’s Black-and-White Seven-Layer Cake as one of the top eight New York City dishes of 2023. “Gertrude’s monumental version, almost as dense and moist as pudding cake, alternates chocolate and yellow layers like piano keys,” Wells writes.
