Artifact information:
Each place setting consisted of a dinner plate, a salad or dessert plate, a bread or fruit plate, a bowl, a butter plate, and a cup and saucer. The pieces discarded were likely the remains of a large service consisting of 8 or 12 place settings.

Artifact Information:
The small white earthenware pitcher was probably used on the dining table for milk or a sauce. Two quart-sized pitchers of a similar design were also excavated.

Artifact information:
The base of the oil lamp would have had a wick with one end submerged in the oil and the other threaded through a brass collar. A protective glass lantern fit into the lamp base.

In 1891, the McKinley Tariff Act was passed requiring that all goods imported in the United States be clearly labeled with the country of origin. Research into the design of makers’ marks can determine the date or the date range of manufacture. The George Jones plate dates to 1861-1873 and the John Edwards plate dates to 1880-1890.

Artifact Information:
Rockingham with its distinctive mottled brown and yellow glaze, was a sturdy ceramic used to make pitchers, crocks, spittoons, and jugs. Transfer printed pearlware on one’s table was a status symbol. Transfer print fashions changed rapidly in design and in colors ranging from brown, black, magenta, green, and blue prints on white. Blue was the preferred color and thus the most often transfer print color excavated.

Artifact Information:
The three-gallon gray salt-glazed crock was made in Bennington, Vermont about 1875 at the Norton Pottery. The cobalt blue design was hand-painted by a resident artist. Salt glaze provides water-proofing so the crock could have stored contents that were dry or wet.

Until the mass manufacture of glass in the mid-1800s, food storage containers were all ceramic, wood, or metal. The early aqua glass canning jars had insert lids of milk glass to keep the jar contents from contact with the metal canning jar lids.

Artifact information:
Cobalt blue Bromo-Seltzer bottles contained the antacid stomach medication still used today. Bromo-Seltzer was invented by Isaac Emerson in 1888 and manufactured in Baltimore, Maryland.
