News for Bard
Families & Friends

Dear Friends:

Happy New Year! For those of you who celebrate the Lunar New Year, I hope you have a wonderful holiday this Sunday.

My name is Sasha Boak-Kelly and I’m the Senior Director of Development at Bard, where I have worked for the Office of Development and Alumni/ae Affairs for over 17 years. I have met many amazing Bard families in my time here and I’m excited to be in touch with you today. Lindsay Davis Carr ’06 has taken on a new role at Bard’s partner institution, the Open Society University Network (OSUN). They are lucky to have such a professional and responsive Bard alumna join their team.

Things were quiet in Annandale for a brief moment, but now things are gearing up as the days are getting longer. The Class of 2026 is back on campus for Citizen Science. This year's focus is the science of water. They are studying drinking-water safety and are looking at water quality, equity, and access. This topic was chosen because it offers "rich ways of teaching and learning the skills of science literacy as well as the place of science within a greater social and political context." We look forward to welcoming all other students back next weekend.

In addition, the Bard College Raptors are back and have kicked off their spring season. Remember that you can watch many of the Raptors games streamed live. Bard’s own Howard Megdal ’07 sportscasts most of the home games, please tune in! Today, Men's and Women's Track and Field have their season opener at Ramapo. Bard Women's Basketball faces Union for a doubleheader this evening. Follow @bardathletics on Instagram to see who faces the Raptors next.

In honor of Lunar New Year, I invite you to join us for the fourth annual Chinese New Year Concert presented by the Bard College Conservatory’s US-China Music Institute with its director Jindong Cai leading Bard’s The Orchestra Now (TŌN) featuring the beloved Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto, along with selected festive works for the orchestra. The first concert is Friday, January 27 at 7 PM at the Sosnoff Theater, Fisher Center on campus. The second concert is Saturday, January 28 at 3 PM at the Rose Theater, Jazz at Lincoln Center, NYC. Click here to purchase tickets for either venue and use the promo code USCMI30 for a 30% discount at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

The Fisher Center has many exciting upcoming performances planned for spring. Visit their calendar for more information and for tickets.

If you have any questions, please be sure to reach out—I am always glad to hear from our families and friends.

P.S. Many thanks to those of you who included Bard in your giving plans in 2022! No matter the size, every gift to the Bard College Fund provides critical support for core needs such as financial aid, teaching, and student life. It is never too early to plan for the 2023 tax year—please consider making a gift this year to support Bard students.

Bard College Professor Jenny Xie Awarded a 2023 Jerome Hill Artist Fellowship in Literature

Assistant Professor of Written Arts and National Book Award finalist Jenny Xie has been selected as a 2023 Jerome Hill Artist Fellow in literature. Xie received one of 54 fellowships awarded to early-career artists based in Minnesota and New York City. Xie will receive $50,000 over two years ($25,000 per year) in direct support to create new work, advance artistic goals, and/or promote professional development. “I strive to create work that demonstrates the vital force unassimilated language can have, of the power and charge that can pulse through words when they behave differently, against rules and convention, and against forces that collude to render language more utilitarian, more homogenous, and free of nuance and rich complexity,” she writes.

Professor Omar G. Encarnación Writes about the Resilience of Brazil’s Democracy for The Nation

The recent attack on the presidential palace in Brazil bears a seeming resemblance to the events of January 6, 2021, at the United States Capitol. For Professor of Political Studies Omar G. Encarnación, however, the similarities are in appearances only. In The Nation, he examines how Brazil’s democracy is better designed to withstand threats. “Even though political violence driven by conspiracy theories and mass delusion about a stolen election will forever unite the Trump and Bolsonaro administrations, Brazilian democracy fared better than American democracy under a president who was hell-bent on undermining the institutions and norms that he was elected to protect,” he writes.

Bard College Awarded $399,000 Grant from Mellon Foundation for Project on Voting Rights

Bard College is proud to announce that it has received a $399,000 award from the Mellon Foundation to support a three-year applied learning research curricular project on voting rights. The project, done in collaboration with North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Tuskegee University, Prairie View A&M University, and The Andrew Goodman Foundation, will use the 26th Amendment, which lowered the voting age from 21 to 18 and outlawed age-based voter discrimination, as a prism through which to understand the history of voting and disenfranchisement in the United States and the role of college communities in the fight for voting rights.

Music in Time of War: President Leon Botstein Writes about Music’s Role in War Beyond the Battlefield in The Musical Quarterly

Bard College President Leon Botstein traces the “complex and subtle connection between music and war in Europe and North America” in history and the present day in his Notes from the Editor for The Musical Quarterly’s Fall-Winter 2022 issue. “Music has long been employed to inspire fear in one’s opponents and bravery in one’s own warriors. Since the advent of technologies of mass communication, however, it is the role of music in war beyond the battlefield that invites equal scrutiny. Indeed, there turns out to be no shortage of music directed at the civilian population designed to deepen patriotic fervor, extol victory, and lament defeat without embracing capitulation,” he writes.

In September, the College announced a transformational $25 million endowment gift from the Gochman Family Foundation to support a renamed American and Indigenous Studies Program. A matching commitment by the Open Society Foundations will create a $50 million endowment for Native American and Indigenous Studies in undergraduate and graduate academics and the arts in Annandale, to include a center for Indigenous Studies and the appointment of an Indigenous Curatorial Fellow at the Center for Curatorial Studies (CCS Bard).

Bard Family Leadership Council (FLC)

Members of the Family Leadership Council (FLC) play a key role in the Bard community through a range of optional activities: developing and participating in on-campus and regional recruiting and mentoring events, promoting and providing career opportunities for students, and participating in peer-to-peer fundraising. Parents and family members on the FLC play a prominent role in the success of the Bard College Fund through annual gifts of $1,500 or greater. The Family Leadership Council meets two times each year—once during Family and Alumni/ae Weekend and again in the spring.
