Organization Overview:

For thirty years the Center for Effective Government has been working to build an open, accountable government that invests in the common good, protects people and the environment, and advances the national priorities defined by an active, informed citizenry. Our vision is one of a just and democratic society in which every individual can thrive.

To ensure government is effective and responsive to the priorities of the American people, we conduct policy research and develop policy proposals; create tools to encourage citizen participation and government accountability; and build broad-based coalitions to advance these values. To ensure the American people understand the vital role of government, we produce and disseminate educational tools and communications materials.
Description:

The Center for Effective Government (formerly OMB Watch) seeks a Public Health Policy & Science Intern to work with its regulatory policy team to advocate for common sense standards and public safeguards that protect our national economy, air and water quality, food and product safety, and workers’ and citizens’ health.  The Center for Effective Government stands for a regulatory system that updates and enforces these standards and safeguards without excessive delay or undue influence from regulated industries.

The regulatory policy team at the Center for Effective Government monitors agency reliance on cost-benefit analysis and has recently begun to increase its focus on how public health agencies assess the risks of chemical and other hazards and weigh the benefits of federal regulation.  The team could use an intern with some scientific expertise to help understand questions about toxicology, epidemiology, and risk assessment.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitoring, research, and analysis of regulatory policy issues administered by the Office of Management and Budget. These include cost-benefit analysis, risk assessment, retrospective review of regulations and other policies affecting health, safety and environmental regulation.
  • Research into federal and state regulatory policy.
  • Writing and editing blog posts, articles, and other communications materials.
  • Other program responsibilities as needed, including administrative and clerical tasks.
Interns learn new skills and gain valuable professional experience with policy analysis, advocacy, and the nonprofit sector.  Interns have the opportunity to perform substantive work that positively impacts public policy. We anticipate assigning a significant research project to Public Health Policy Intern. The intern will be expected to draft a research report for this project.
Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of, and interest in, U.S. public policy and governmental process. Preference will be given to graduate students in public health or public policy with a background in science.
  • Ability to conduct research on complex health, safety and environmental topics and communicate the results of that research in a clear and concise manner.
  • Computer knowledge including Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Available to work at least 20 hours per week.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong critical thinking, analytical, and writing skills.
  • Self-motivated, with strong desire to make a difference.
  • Reliable and well-organized, with effective interpersonal skills.
