Position Title: Climate Finance Intern

Location: New York City, New York

Dates and compensation: 3 Months – 10-12 hours a week minimum. Start and end Dates are flexible.; unpaid

Description: The Rainforest Alliance Sustainable Finance Initiative (SFI) supports small- and medium-scale farms and forestry enterprises working toward Rainforest Alliance certification, and those already certified, to access the financing they need to help their businesses grow and become economically sustainable. SFI’s work focuses on the following areas: 1/ Financial literacy and business management education for Rainforest Alliance producers and producer groups; 2/ Access to finance for producers and producer groups through the promotion of financial product innovation and linkage to social lenders and local financial institutions; 3/ Building the case for the economic benefits of sustainability for producers and producer groups and the financial community.

Climate Finance: SFI aims to identify climate finance mechanisms to be used to generate additional revenue-streams for Rainforest Alliance producers engaging in carbon positive activities. Research in this area may focus on i) surveying payments for ecosystem services and mechanisms implemented under REED+; ii) researching other climate finance models involving smallholder producers and/or focusing on landscape conservation; iii) assessing Rainforest Alliance’s partners appetite for carbon finance activities.

Qualifications: Ideal for graduate students in good academic standing.  Self-starter, resourceful and detail-oriented individual with great analytical and communications skills needed. Sound research skills, adeptness and ability to conduct interviews with professionals in the field. Spanish proficiency preferred for the climate finance intern.
