Description: The Ironbound Community Corporation (ICC) is a 46-year nonprofit organization whose mission is to engage and empower individuals, families and groups in realizing their aspirations and, together, work to create a just, vibrant and sustainable community. ICC strives to address the needs of our diverse, multi-lingual, multi-cultural community. Today, ICC serves more than 1000 children and families every day with a wide range of programs and services. ICC also strengthens communities through advocacy, neighborhood organizing, and community development initiatives.

Responsibilities:

Conduct outreach and organizing around key environmental justice issues and build a base of environmental justice advocates

Develop and implement a strategic base building plan that establishes a core of engaged environmental justice advocates

Participate in weekly door-2-door knocking to share information about campaigns, and invite people to participate

Mobilize residents and environmental justice advocates to local community events, public meetings, and important actions.

Conduct weekly outreach in places where community congregates (churches, schools, parks, community centers, etc.)

Share ICC services with environmental justice advocates

Promote and conduct outreach for leadership development trainings and teach-ins.

Build on the relationships ICC already has established with local partners, churches, etc.

Establish new relationships with churches, social services agencies, business organizations, etc. to identify ways of collaborating that will push an environmental justice agenda forward.

Work with EJ programs manager and other EJCD staff to develop and assist with environmental justice campaigns

Participate in the planning and coordinating of community events, actions, etc.

Work with other organizers to connect active EJ advocates to campaigns

Lead outreach for trainings and teach-ins in the first few months of employment

Develop facilitating and presentation skills to be able to conduct effective trainings and teach-ins for new ICC contacts

Continue to work with existing partners and allies to build a local, regional, state, national, and international environmental justice movement.

Attend monthly Coalition for Healthy Ports meeting & conduct necessary local outreach and organizing around ports, trucks, and general freight/goods movement issues

Work with EJ Program Manager to reconnect (or connect for the first time) local organizations and agencies to the Coalition for Healthy Ports work around ports issues

Identify potential public health collaborations with non-traditional partners, such as business districts, planning agencies, etc.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and oral communication in English and at least one other language (Spanish/Portuguese)
  • Organizing experience with demonstrated results
  • Organized, effective community organizer with experience working in low-income communities of color
  • Ability to work and communicate with diverse audience: staff, organizational partners and community members
  • Experience organizing and/or participating in direct actions
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; Adobe Suite is a plus.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends (preferred)
  • Demonstrate effective teamwork skills
  • Experience with campaign development and base-building(preferred)
  • A valid New Jersey Driver’s License and own transportation (preferred)
  • A minimum of a B.A. in a relevant field or 5 years of organizing experience
