Description: The Program Coordinator will be responsible for the coordination and delivery of high-quality youth development programming. The Program Coordinator partners with the Program Directors for the High School & Alumni and Middle School Programs to provide integrated programming for City Kids Wilderness Project participants. Responsibilities include outdoor adventure and educational programming, youth recruitment and engagement, and volunteer program coordination. This position reports to the Program Director.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate all aspects of outdoor adventure and educational programming to support positive youth development for middle school, high school and alumni youth in Washington, DC and in Jackson, WY. Programming includes summer camp, weekend outdoor adventures, afterschool programs, family workshops, as well as individual youth and family mentorship.
  • Coordinate logistics and lead outdoor adventure trips. Planning includes youth outreach, staffing, permitting, food, gear, outfitter coordination, and transportation.
  • Create and maintain written program materials; design activities and lessons that incorporate goal-setting, rituals, and reflection activities to align with organizational goals.
  • Foster participant, family, school and programmatic partnerships. Maintain and develop strong relationships with community members and partners to provide a network of support for youth.
  • Support the recruitment of new participants annually and work to retain enrolled participants throughout the program.
  • Conduct regular outreach to program participants to provide feedback, identify needs and connect youth with available resources for support.
  • Design and initiate a volunteer outreach and training plan to grow the volunteer program. Leverage volunteer resources to expand program offerings and deepen the impact of our programs.
  • Support Program Directors with hiring, training and supervision of seasonal staff and volunteers.
  • Manage inventory, storage, inspection, and repair of outdoor gear. Train staff on proper gear use, including emergency response communication technology and mapping resources. Maintain pro-deals and act as the lead for gear donations.
  • Support program evaluation through regular tracking of attendance and program activities in participant database as outlined in our evaluation plan.
  • Collect and compile required youth records and ensure they are properly maintained in participant database and paper files.
  • Support development functions and events.
  • Be a leader in implementing risk management practices.
  • Ensure strict adherence to City Kids Wilderness Project policies and procedures and/or other applicable standards.
  • Maintain an internal culture that reflects City Kids values of respect, experiential learning, appreciation of the environment and belief in the possibility of each of our youth.
  • Role requires alternative working schedule based around program calendar, often requires work on weekend and evenings.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • A personal commitment to and understanding of CKWP’s mission.
  • Experience and passion for working with underserved urban youth.
  • Knowledge of the theory, practice and current industry standards of wilderness adventure education, outdoor education, experiential education, environmental education, risk management, afterschool programming, and state and local regulations.
  • A successful track record of program management and direct staff supervisory experience.
  • Outstanding verbal, written, and listening skills.
  • Flexibility, creativity and the ability to thrive in an evolving environment.
  • An engaging and dynamic personality that demonstrates warmth and good humor when working with individuals.
  • Personal qualities of maturity, humility, strong work ethic, and a roll-up-my-sleeves attitude.
  • A valid, clean driver’s license.
  • Current CPR, Wilderness First Aid, or higher certification.
