Sustainable Living Internship

Organization: Windward Center

Location: Klickitat, WA

Website: www.windward.org

Description

The Windward Internship is an immersive experience in sustainable living at the
small community level. Internships are offered for 12 weeks on a rolling basis at
various times of the year.

Windward Interns will participate in the construction and operation of our various
sustainable systems, building theoretical understanding as well as
a range of practical, hands-on skills. Duties may involve all community projects, including
caring for livestock, organic gardening, food preparation and preservation,
sustainable energy systems and infrastructure, light construction and equipment
operation, general maintenance and upkeep.

In addition, Interns are expected to assume responsibility for their own Sustainability
Project, which will be structured and developed under the guidance of Windward’s
Internship Coordinator and other community members, as appropriate.
Windward Interns will receive room and board during their Internship, and
will be invited to participate in community meals and social activities.

Upon successful completion of their Internship, Interns who fi nd the cooperative
lifestyle appropriate for them can apply for admission to our Stewardship
Apprenticeship Program and work towards full membership in the cooperative.

The Windward Internship is not a desk job. Interns will be working outside and getting
their hands dirty. So you need to be in good health and physical condition.
We value initiative, common sense and inquiring minds. The ideal candidate is probably
in their mid-20s with a college degree and looking for an opportunity to grow
intellectually and learn practical skills. Windward Interns are probably the sort of
people who don’t want to climb the corporate ladder at this point in their lives, and
would rather explore the adventures of cooperative community and environmentally
sound practices as part of their personal quest to create a good life.

How To Apply

If you think that you might be such a person, we invite you to introduce yourself by
means of a brief (and honest) description of your personal and educational background,
your work experience (if any) and what you learned from it. Besides the
facts, we want to know what makes you tick. So tell us about your interests, what
you think your strengths and weaknesses are, something about why Windward
draws your interest and which of our projects you’d be interested in focusing on for
your Sustainability Project.
