Position: Associate

Description

The National League of Cities is seeking an experienced professional to be responsible for providing research, policy, and program support to assist the development of NLCs work as a leading resource for cities on sustainability issues. Reports to the Program Director for Sustainability.

Examples of Work:

Contributes to implementation of work plans and long-term strategies for progress on issues related to sustainability, including energy, environment, economic development, social responsibility, food, land use and community design.

Conducts research and outreach to identify innovative city practices and initiatives on sustainability issues.

Prepares articles and shares examples of innovative city practices and initiatives through NLC’s newspaper, electronic newsletters, website, blog, twitter account, and database.

Researches and authors guides on selected cities and practices that can serve as models for other local governments.

Organizes meetings, conference calls, webinars, and other outreach activities as appropriate.

Responds to requests for information from NLC member cities, state municipal leagues, and other interested parties on sustainability issues.

Assists the program staff in planning and implementing workshops and meetings at NLC’s two annual conferences – the Congress of Cities and the Congressional City Conference.

Identifies and utilizes relevant research and program information available through other national and international organizations engaged in sustainability issues, and contributes to efforts to build partnerships with such organizations when appropriate.

Attends relevant conferences and webinars sponsored by local, state, and national organizations in order to stay abreast of the latest developments in the field.

May serve as a resource on related issues to other NLC staff.

Some travel required.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree required; graduate work in political science, public administration, urban affairs, public policy, urban planning, or related field preferred; minimum two years of relevant experience in research, program development, or policy analysis; experience with association or membership organizations preferred; or, a combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of sustainability issues is required and familiarity with local government is preferred; strong research, writing, and interpersonal communications skills; ability to prioritize and meet deadlines; ability to work both independently and collaboratively; knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and computer database programs; familiarity with social media tools; ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of audiences, including elected officials, representatives of outside organizations, consultants, and all levels of NLC staff.
