Would you like to work with local community organizers to create organically-managed public spaces? Are you looking for an opportunity to make a difference in national organic ag policy? Are you an eclectic person willing to use science, policy and grassroots action to effect positive change? Beyond Pesticides is seeking such a person to serve as its new project associate.

Beyond Pesticides is a national non-profit research and action organization based in science and focused on protecting public health and the environment through policy change at all levels of government, as well as personal and institutional changes using public outreach and education. Beyond Pesticides is a leader in the areas of organic food and sustainable agriculture, pesticide-free landscape and building management, pollinator protection, pesticide regulation, environmental health, and more.

Job Duties:

• Work with a diverse group of farmers, physicians, environmentalists, and consumer advocates to promote sustainable, organic food systems and protect the integrity of the national organic seal, by analyzing organic inputs and farming methods and critiquing current organic policy;

• Coordinate a national coalition of local grassroots activists and organizations working to pass policies designating organic and pesticide-free parks, open spaces, and other landscapes. Also provide technical assistance to municipalities, institutions and individuals converting to organic land care;

• With an international network of beekeepers, farmers, and environmentalists, help lead efforts to protect honey bees and wild pollinators from pesticides through regulatory action, policy change, and public education;

• Create educational and organizing materials that contribute to efforts to change policy and personal decisions, including factsheets, articles, reports, and online materials.

• Attend meetings, lobby and speak at functions regarding organizational projects.

• Assist the executive director and program staff on an as-needed basis.

Qualifications: Applicants must possess a master’s degree (or equivalent experience) and have a minimum of two years of work experience in soil health, land management, agronomy, and/or organic agriculture. A degree in a science or policy is helpful and preferred. Excellent communication skills, ability to work independently and in a group, juggle priorities and a willingness to take initiative required. Ability to work some nights and weekends expected. Applicants must possess a healthy skepticism of risk assessment and appreciation for the precautionary principle.
