ISEAL Monitoring and Evaluation Coordinator

Position: Monitoring and Evaluation Coordinator

Organization: ISEAL

Location: London, UK

Start Date: October 3

Application Deadline: September 5

Description

ISEAL is an international non-profit organisation that codifies best practice for the design and implementation of social and environmental standards systems. Standard systems are all activities and organisations that support the implementation of social and environmental standards and certification processes, including standard-setting, assurance, capacity building, impact assessment, research and governance, and that have a role to play in the effectiveness of the system as a whole. ISEAL shapes the context in which sustainability standards systems operate, by defining what good practice looks like for the sector, as well as through influencing how external stakeholders think about and engage with credible voluntary standards systems.

At the core of the ISEAL Alliance is a network of organisations that work together to improve the operation of voluntary standards and certification. Our members include most of the leading social and environmental standards systems worldwide (e.g. Forest Stewardship Council, the Marine Stewardship Council, and the Fairtrade International). They are supported by a wide range of organisations, from research institutions to capacity building organisations to certification bodies, who participate in the ISEAL Alliance as affiliates. Collectively, this diverse group of actors makes up the ISEAL Community. Community participants cooperate on technical and policy-related issues through workshops, field projects and knowledge exchange, building on our recently developed online learning community.

ISEAL’s most recent Code of Good Practice for Voluntary Standards Systems is the Impacts Code (www.isealalliance.org/content/impacts-code). The Impacts Code is an evaluation policy for the sustainability standards movement. All ISEAL member organisations are required to implement this Code. It requires standard setting bodies to develop a theory of change, design and implement an internal monitoring and evaluation system, use M&E data for internal learning and improvement, and arrange for periodic independent impact evaluations.

The Role:

The newly created position of Monitoring & Evaluation Coordinator will support the activities of our learning and membership team. In particular, the role will work closely with the Monitoring and Evaluation Manager to provide support to members in implementing the Impacts Code and to support the ISEAL Secretariat’s own organisational monitoring and evaluation efforts. As well as carrying out organisational tasks such as scheduling meetings/events and taking care of logistical requirements, Impacts Code implementation support will include a range of activities, including helping to coordinate collaborative projects aimed at strengthening specific elements of code implementation, such as the evaluation of poverty alleviation or biodiversity conservation impacts. Support for ISEAL’s own M&E system will involve helping to organise surveys, working with staff in various teams to collect and interpret other forms of M&E data, and assisting with report writing.

What We Seek:

This role requires someone with the ability to take on specific monitoring and evaluation related work as well as provide help with logistics and project administration activities. You have experience (through paid work, internships or studies) that demonstrates your knowledge of monitoring, evaluation, appropriate research methodologies and approaches as well as your ability to meet deadlines, provide logistic and administrative support, and work effectively both independently and as part of a team. You pay attention to detail, are flexible, and willing to take on a range of tasks, including working on team activities that fall outside of the role’s core functions.

You are a systems oriented individual who likes to delve into information, analyse and manipulate it to present findings or ideas in text and in graphical or tabular form. You are also able to turn quantitative findings into clear and engaging reports, findings and recommendations. You have some training and experience in project or programme evaluation and/or socio-economic, environmental or agricultural research (e.g. research methods, data collection, data analysis etc). Any of the above may have been gained as result of internships, studies and/or paid work.

With a proven ability to work well independently, without constant supervision or guidance, you also like working as an active member of a dynamic team. Demonstrating good email and phone skills, you are able to work with people at a distance. You have strong interpersonal skills and are good at dealing with people one on one or in small groups in order to help them understand processes and achieve objectives.

Ideally, you have had some firsthand experience with (or good knowledge of) sustainability standard systems and the implementation of sustainable development and/or research projects in the field. You are looking to deepen your knowledge of this area and to further develop your skills in monitoring and evaluating impacts of sustainability standards systems.
