Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts is currently hiring for the position of Manager of Environmental Impact.

Position Summary
The successful candidate in this role will a record of creating and implementing programs that address sustainability issues and solutions in a large corporate environment. Working with the Senior Director of Corporate Citizenship, this role is accountable for executing on the strategic direction and day-to-day management of a company-wide sustainability program that includes assessing the impact of sustainability practices to the company and community at large. This will be accomplished through the creation and support of sustainable solutions that reduce energy and decrease the company’s carbon footprint. Externally, this person will work to help balance the company’s shared objectives for a healthy environment, including the support of community programs that increase access to healthy produce, green spaces and outdoor recreational activities. The incumbent will also share leadership and implementation duties for the company’s annual flagship BlueCrew Day of Service, when thousands of associates from across the company will have the opportunity to participate in service projects on a single day. This combination of internal and external efforts, particularly as they relate BCBSMA’s new focused community relations strategy, will help to position the company further as a leader in corporate social responsibility and work to increase the health outcomes of Massachusetts residents. This position will report to the Senior Director of Corporate Citizenship.

Position Summary:
Key Accountabilities:

  • Identify, review and assess the company’s current sustainability services and programs within all company departments. Evaluate programs for best practices, duplications or overlap within the various departments. Assess current sustainability goals and strategies to bring greater coordination of services. Streamline identified opportunities for improvement.
  • Develop a comprehensive sustainability policy and a strategic performance plan for the company that encompasses current goals, best practices, and moves the company towards the next step of a more environmentally sustainable future.
  • In collaboration across the company, the manager will evaluate, enhance, and develop metric systems that monitor and assess progress towards achieving performance goals at all appropriate organizational levels.
  • Develop and implement marketing and educational programs that inspire our associates to embrace environmental sustainability practices and change the thinking, behavior and practice of individuals and departments by focusing on the importance of sustainable activities.
  • Develop and implement an external communication program for HR (aimed towards new associates), Sales (aimed towards new customers) etc, to help the company move towards using sustainability as a competitive advantage.
  • Coordinate activities that accomplish all levels of conservation and sustainable development within the company to include green purchasing, energy conservation, solid waste recycling, green building, resource and water conservation, green house gas reduction, renewable resources, and environmental reporting metrics.
  • Perform highly complex forecasting and cost/benefit analysis to enable executive leadership to make informed decisions that focus on optimizing social and environmental impacts of sustainability program initiatives.
  • Provide oversight and direction of research and analysis conducted by outside council and other governing agencies for sustainability needs to determine program direction and goals.
  • Serve as a skilled facilitator who works collaboratively with the company and across the community to develop strategic direction and integrate the company’s sustainability policy and practice. Develop partnerships and work with community members, organizations and other agencies to further establish the company’s sustainability program and to integrate sustainable practices.
  • Act as the official Company representative to outside agencies and the community; effectively communicating all sustainability related programs, policies, and activities; negotiate and resolve significant, and controversial issues pertaining to sustainability.
  • Brief and advise senior leaders regarding sustainability programs.
  • Respond to and resolve sensitive inquiries, complaints and issues from both internal and external sources.
  • Lead a cross functional environmental council (the green@blue Council) who act as liasons/’green’ ambassadors in business areas across the company, to help develop and implement sustainability strategy.
  • Work with members of the BlueCrew team to identify and coordinate ‘green’ community service projects throughout the year and in-particular as a major component of the annual company-wide BlueCrew Day of Service.
  • Work in collaboration with other department leaders to manage departmental budget of roughly $4 million+, together working to achieve significant impact from both internal and external perspectives.
  • Continue to increase positive overall business savings from advancement of sustainable practices across business areas.
  • Assist with annual recycling and waste program contract bid; identify and implement solutions to increase recycling rates by 20%.
  • Complete annual energy audits at various BCBSMA locations, leveraging outside experts to evaluate energy-related opportunities at each location and deliver recommendations for overall business savings.

Experience and Education:

  • BA/BS required; Masters Degree in related field preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant project management experience, as well as implementation experience in corporate or nonprofit settings.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience within the field of corporate social responsibility/environmental sustainability, creating and implementing programs that are aligned to the department strategy and address sustainability issues/solutions in large, corporate environments.
