Description:

We are soliciting resumes from qualified individuals for the position of Authorized Desert Tortoise Biologist to cover projects in California and Southern Nevada. The Biologist will be required to assist with clearance surveys, monitor construction activities, and relocate desert tortoises. This position involves 8 to 12 hour days monitoring construction equipment, often times in inclement weather. This is a full-time, temporary position from early January through March with the potential to be extended. A vehicle will be provided as well as housing and per diem for overnight work away from Las Vegas.

Responsibilities:

  • Follow and enforce project requirements for protection of desert tortoise;
  • Follow directions from on site desert tortoise biologists;
  • Conduct surveys and collect data concerning desert tortoise and other sensitive wildlife and habitat;
  • Record data on field site forms or other forms and manage these data;
  • Use Trimble or Garmin GPS units to collect data;
  • Operate SWCA vehicles in a safe manner, during on and off-road conditions. Notifying appropriate person when vehicle requires maintenance;
  • Work with on-site construction personnel;
  • Work in remote locations;Cooperate with other team members;
  • Complete weekly updates for the project manager.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Minimum of B.A. or B.S. in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or related field.
  • Experience conducting construction monitoring for Mojave desert tortoise is required.Must be able to complete the desert tortoise authorized biologist form showing at least 480 hours of tortoise monitoring experience: http://www.fws.gov/nevada/desert_tortoise/auth_dt_form.htm
  • California Department of Fish and Game Desert Tortoise Scientific Collecting Permit highly preferred.Prefer 1-3 years of experience in related fieldwork.
  • Ability to record complete and accurate data.
  • Candidates must be able to conduct fieldwork for long hours, in sometimes inclement weather conditions, including walking at least 10-miles in rugged terrain, and be able to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • The successful candidate should have flexibility and willingness to learn company procedures, ability to try new, improved techniques, make independent decisions when appropriate to the situation and make adjustments as a member of a team in order to complete tasks in the most efficient and accurate manner.
