Shuman is an economist, attorney, author, and entrepreneur, and a leading visionary on community economics. He’s also an adjunct instructor at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, a Fellow at Cutting Edge Capital and at the Post-Carbon Institute, and a founding board member of the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE). He is credited with being one of the architects of the 2012 JOBS Act and dozens of state laws overhauling securities regulation of crowdfunding. He has authored, coauthored, or edited nine books. His most recent book, published by Chelsea Green in May 2015, is The Local Economy Solution: How Innovative, Self-Financing Pollinator Enterprises Can Grow Jobs and Prosperity. One of his previous books, The Small Mart Revolution: How Local Businesses Are Beating the Global Competition (Berrett-Koehler, 2006), received as bronze prize from the Independent Publishers Association for best business book of 2006. He has been with Allagash Brewing Company for 6 years in the mechanical department, and is the Manager of Facilities and Major Systems and the Sustainability Lead. He has been doing sustainability work at Allagash for over 5 years, and running the program for 2 and a half. Luke is a member of the Brewers Association's Sustainability Subcommittee. He is also involved in local climate activism through the Portland Climate Action Team (PCAT). Luke prefers outdoors to indoors, facts to alternative facts, and beer to liquor. JD Capuano is a Senior Strategist with Third Partners, a sustainability consultancy focused on responsible business strategy, data science and marketing. JD works with clients on sustainability strategy and data projects across industries at Fortune 500 and privately-held companies. He does some independent strategy consulting on business process optimization and marketing science. JD co-founded and led Closed Loop Advisors, a data-driven sustainability management consultancy, from 2011 until 2016. Prior to his work in sustainability, JD spent nearly a decade in global business analytics at Schering-Plough (now Merck). At Schering-Plough, his responsibilities ranged from coding and analyzing big data sets to being a dedicated in-house management consultant for VPs in marketing and sales. His career began pioneering a role that maximized use of the internet to grow business at a mid-sized recruiting firm. JD has consulted at an executive level on strategic and operational challenges for over a decade, striking a balance between innovation and practicality while planning and implementing projects. He speaks at sustainability and technology events, has been recognized by Crain’s New York, and his work has been cited in Bloomberg Businessweek. JD has been involved with a number of nonprofit programs focused on the environment and civic engagement. The Impact Report: Using Art to Promote Sustainable Behaviors and LifestylesAnne De Carbuccia, Artist+Creator, One Planet One Future // Founder, Time Shrine FoundationPodcast 8:00 am – 9:00 am EST/GMT-5 Anne de Carbuccia is a French-American environmental artist. She has traveled the globe for several years documenting the evolution of the planet and the impact of mankind on the environment. Born in New York and growing up in Paris, Anne spent most summers on the island of Corsica and developed a keen interest for nature. Her father was the publisher and friend of many explorers of the time, such as Jacques Cousteau and Alain Bombard, and Anne spent many holidays listening to their stories of adventures often infused with scientific and cultural references. She attended Columbia University in New York City, majoring in Art History and Anthropology. In her studies, she developed an interest on the era of human beings as a geological force, the Anthropocene, and on its dangers for the planet. On a filming expedition to Antarctica, she conceived the Time Shrines, temporary installations created in symbolic environments that Anne photographs to create a permanent record. In the Time Shrines, she combines 16th and 17th century still life symbology with her fascination for shrines as one of the first spiritual and arti stic human expressions. After Antarctica, she made many expeditions, producing more than one hundred images in the last four years for her artistic project One Planet One Future. With the One Planet One Future photographs, Anne continues to draw attention to the current environmental crisis and to inspire people to change behaviors and habits contributing to it. In 2016, Anne established the Time Shrine Foundation, a nonprofit established to raise awareness and protect vulnerable species, environments and cultures. The Foundation is funded by donations from individuals and corporations, and by the sale of artwork and sustainable merchandise. Anne recently opened a permanent New York exhibition, ONE Art Space, in the historic Westbeth Arts Center. The space serves as a center for education, collaboration, and community. The Impact Report: Eliminating the Idea of Waste by Recycling EverythingTom Szaky, CEO + Founder, TerraCyclePodcast 8:00 am – 9:00 am EST/GMT-5 Tom Szaky is the Founder and CEO of TerraCycle, Inc., one of the world’s leaders in eco-capitalism and the reuse of non-recyclable, pre and post-consumer waste. Born in Budapest, Hungary in 1982, Tom and his family emigrated as political refugees to the Netherlands and eventually to Toronto. At age 14 he started his first business, a Web design company, which earned Tom a five-figure income and a number of Canadian national design awards. In 2017, TerraCycle, Procter & Gamble and SUEZ announced production of the world’s first recyclable shampoo bottle made from plastic collected from beaches and waterways. Dish soap bottles made with beach plastic will go on shelves in the UK in mid-2018. Also in 2017, TerraCycle acquired Air Cycle Corporation, giving TerraCycle its first foray into waste disposal mandated by federal regulations. Tom’s first book, “Revolution in a Bottle,” was released in 2009, with a second edition in 2013. His second book, “Outsmart Waste” came out in 2014 and a third, “Make Garbage Great” in July 2015. A fourth, “The Future of Packaging,” is expected in Fall 2018. Tom created, produced and starred in TerraCycle’s reality show, “Human Resources” which aired on Pivot from 2014-2016. Tom and TerraCycle have received numerous social, environmental and business awards and recognition from a range of organizations. Most recently, Tom was named a Schwab Foundation Social Entrepreneur of the Year and a Forbes Magazine Future 30 in 2013. In 2016, Fortune magazine listed TerraCycle as one of “7 World-Changing Companies to Watch.” In 2017, TerraCycle was a winner of the United Nations Momentum for Change award and recognized by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for its programs. His research has been featured in The New York Times, Scientific American, The Economist, and USA Today. In recent years, Goodstein has coordinated climate education events at over 2500 colleges, universities, high schools and other institutions across the country He serves on the editorial board of Sustainability: The Journal of Record, and is on the Steering Committee of Economics for Equity & the Environment. The Impact Report: New York City Takes a Stand Against Big OilDan Zarrilli,Chief Resilience Officer, City of New YorkPodcast 8:00 am – 9:00 am EST/GMT-5 Daniel Zarrilli was appointed Senior Director of Climate Policy and Programs for the City of New York by Mayor Bill de Blasio in January 2016 and is serving as New York City’s Chief Resilience Officer, overseeing the Mayor’s Office of Recovery and Resiliency, the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability, the Mayor's Office of Environmental Coordination, and the coordination of the City’s OneNYC program of inclusive climate action. From March 2014 to December 2016, he served as the first Director of the NYC Mayor’s Office of Recovery and Resiliency, leading an over $20 billion climate adaptation program across the five boroughs, and had served as the Acting Director of the NYC Mayor’s Office of Long-Term Planning and Sustainability from February to December 2014, during which time the City committed to its goal of an 80% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2050. Prior to this, he served on the Special Initiative for Rebuilding and Resiliency, a task force that developed an award-winning climate adaptation program for New York City after Hurricane Sandy, and was appointed by Mayor Bloomberg in 2013 as the city’s first Director of Resiliency. In 2016, Daniel was appointed by NOAA to a 3-year term to the Sustained National Climate Assessment advisory board. He is also serving a 3-year term on FEMA’s National Advisory Council, and recently concluded work advising the State of Louisiana on its 2017 Coastal Master Plan update. Previously, he was Senior Vice President for Asset Management at the New York City Economic Development Corporation and also spent five years with Bechtel Infrastructure Corporation. Daniel is a New York State Professional Engineer and holds an MS in Civil and Environmental Engineering from MIT and a BS in Civil Engineering from Lehigh University. He resides in Staten Island with his wife and three children.
