Program Overview

The MA in Chinese Music and Culture is a unique opportunity for music scholars seeking to develop a balance between music practice and academic research. A range of interdisciplinary course offerings will deepen students’ understanding of Chinese musical tradition and cultivate their musical skills, while also providing a solid foundation in Chinese Classical and contemporary language, history, and culture.

Students who complete the program will be prepared to embark on careers in various fields of China studies such as musical performance, education and academic research, and musical and media industries.

"We created this program to be able to offer graduate level academic training to musicians of all kinds with an interest in Chinese culture. As we all know, Chinese culture is thousands of years old, yet there is limited access to pursue Chinese music studies in the West. We need to foster a new generation of scholars, performers, and cultural advocates with the knowledge and skills to advance research and promote a deeper appreciation for both traditional and contemporary Chinese music in today's society."
