January 1: Application deadline
Mid-January: Applicants are notified of prescreening results via their Application Portal
Late February or Early March: Final Auditions at Bard College or online
March 1: Financial Aid Application deadline
Mid-March: Final admissions decisions and financial aid packages will be released. 
April 15: Enrollment deadline

  • Academic Materials
    学术材料
    1. Three letters of recommendation from areas of performance, academics, and other. When prompted in the application, please enter the recommender’s name and email address. The recommender will receive an email with instructions on how to submit the recommendation online.
    2. All academic transcripts from professional and undergraduate institutions attended. 
    3. Language proficiency scores, both in English and Chinese. 
    4. GRE score (optional)
  • Written Materials

    1. Completed application for admission to the M.A. program.  
    2. Personal statement of purpose. The statement should be brief, no more than two pages in length, describing the journey which has led you to apply to the M.A. program in Chinese Music and Culture, including your research and study interests, future career plans and other aspects of your interests which will help the admission committee in evaluating your motivation for graduate study.
    3. A résumé/CV, including academic and performance details.
  • Prescreening

    Create an applicant account and submit the following:

    For musicians of traditional Chinese instruments, Western instruments, or voice: 
    • A live/Zoom audition or a prescreening video of at least three pieces.
    For composers:
    • Two original pieces, both scores and recordings. 
    For ethno/musicologists:
    • a previously written article, paper, or research project

Language Requirements

For Non-Native Chinese Speakers
Chinese language proficiency at intermediate-high level in speaking and reading based on the ACTFL rating scale. Evidence of proficiency is required, or a language test or interview will be arranged by the program director. 

For International Applicants
TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo Test score is required.
Test score guidelines include a TOEFL score of at least 600 (paper-based), 250 (computer-based), or 100 (Internet-based). An IELTS a band score of no less than seven. A Duolingo Test score of no less than 120. Students should only request results to be sent electronically to Bard College directly from TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test, and not physical documents to be mailed. This requirement may be waived if the candidate has an undergraduate degree from an English-speaking institution.
