Biography:
Sucharita Kanjilal’s research centers on the role of gendered labor in the growth of global digital capitalism, and draws connections between economic anthropology, anthropology of media, feminist theory, and the anthropology of food. Her dissertation project at the University of California, Los Angeles, Home Chefs: Indian Housewives Produce for the Global Creator Economy, examines the entanglements of gender, race, caste, and religious nationalism in the growth of digital capitalism through an ethnographic study of food media producers in India. A former journalist from Mumbai, Professor Kanjilal has published articles in Gastronomica, the Routledge Companion to Caste and Cinema in India, Feminist Media Struggles (forthcoming), and Hindustan Times, and appeared on the Heritage Radio Network and Eat This podcasts. Honors include Dissertation Year and Anthropology Department fellowships at UCLA, Society for the Anthropology of Food and Nutrition research award, and Wenner Gren Foundation Dissertation fieldwork grant. She previously taught undergraduate courses at UCLA in the anthropology of food, psychological anthropology, globalization and culture, sociocultural anthropology, and archaeology.BA, St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai; MA, SOAS University of London; PhD candidate, University of California, Los Angeles.
