Bard Graduate Center: Decorative Arts, Design History, Material Culture

Founded in 1993, the Bard Graduate Center (BGC) is a research institute in New York City dedicated to the study of the cultural history of the material world. The BGC offers programs leading to M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in the history of the decorative arts, design history, and material culture. The curriculum includes courses in comparative medieval culture; early modern Europe; modern design history; the history and theory of museums; New York and American material culture; and archaeology, anthropology, and material culture. The BGC also publishes a semiannual journal, organizes exhibitions, and presents a broad range of public programs. The BGC campus is on West 86th Street in Manhattan, in newly renovated and expanded townhouses just off Central Park and near some of the world’s leading museums.
