From Black Holes to Gravitational Waves and Quantum Measurement
Antonios Kontos, Physics program
Thursday, July 6, 2017
3 pm
Reem-Kayden Center Laszlo Z. Bito '60 AuditoriumWith three detections and counting, the Advanced LIGO gravitational-wave observatories have opened a new window into the Universe. For now, all the detected gravitational-waves originated from collisions of two black holes. The effect that these gravitational-waves have as they pass through space is to stretch and compress space-time, much like sound waves stretch and compress the air. To understand the challenge of detecting this effect here on Earth, imagine (if you can) that a reasonably strong gravitational wave changes the length of one kilometer by one thousandth of a proton's diameter. At this level of sensitivity, quantum mechanics and the Heisenberg uncertainty principle start playing a significant role and if we want to listen further into the Universe, we need to manipulate the quantum nature of light to our advantage. In this talk I will give an overview of gravitational waves, how LIGO detects them, and why quantum mechanics matters when measuring distances with such precision.Sponsored by: Bard Summer Research Institute.

Writing and Thinking Weeklong Summer Workshops
Sunday, July 9, 2017 – Friday, July 14, 2017
9–4 am
Olin Humanities BuildingThe IWT July weeklong workshops offer teachers an opportunity to develop an understanding of “writing-based teaching,” its theory and practices, and its application in the classroom. Each workshop will focus on writing methods that deepen learning across all subject areas–literature, history, grammar, and STEM.
The July workshops offer a retreat in which participants learn new writing practices, read diverse texts, and talk with teachers from around the world on the Bard College campus. The luxury of time helps us envision how we might make these new practices our own–how we might tweak the writing prompts, change the readings, figure out ways to accommodate collaborative learning in larger classes, and explore how poetry, for instance, might inspire students from ethnically and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
The weeklong regular workshop fee is $1,500 and includes tuition and a single-occupancy room on the Bard campus, meals (beginning with Sunday dinner and ending with Saturday breakfast), and materials.
Register by June 1, 2017 to receive the Early Bird Workshop fee of $1,350.
The commuter fee is $1,200 (the early-bird commuter fee is $1050).
Groups of three or more teachers from a single institution receive an additional 10% discount off total workshop fees.

Efficient Learning:
What are the Limits of Human Memory?
Jeremy R. Manning, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Psychological & Brain Sciences
Dartmouth College
Thursday, July 13, 2017
3 pm
Reem-Kayden Center Laszlo Z. Bito '60 AuditoriumOur memory systems leverage the statistical structure of the world around us (context) to organize and store incoming information and retrieve previously stored information. This enables us to recognize the situations we are in and to adapt our behaviors accordingly. For example, your might choose to behave differently on a road trip with close friends versus commuting into work with your boss, even though many aspects of your perceptual experience are preserved across those two scenarios. You might also remember different aspects of conversations from those trips when asked about them later.
In my talk, I will explore the extent to which (and the circumstances under which) these sorts of processes may be manipulated to influence memory. I’ll begin by exploring these processes using a simple word list learning paradigm. I’ll show how we can influence memory performance (specifically, how many words people remember and the order people remember the words in). Then I’ll talk about how these same ideas can be applied to “naturalistic” memories, such as memories for scenes in a movie or concepts learned in the classroom.Sponsored by: Bard Summer Research Institute.

Vince Giordano & the Nighthawks

8 pm
Hear the music of an era of bootlegged booze, the Foxtrot, and Jazz Age decadence in an evening of vintage swing by Grammy Award-winning Vince Giordano & The Nighthawks.Big Band leader and multi-instrumentalist Giordano brought the sounds of the Roaring Twenties to life in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire (and can be seen & heard throughout all five seasons) and has recorded for countless films and TV series over the past three decades, with recent titles including Café Society (2016), Carol (2015), and the first season of the new Amazon series Z: The Beginning of Everything (2017). Giordano was recently featured in the multi-award winning documentary There’s a Future in the Past, a behind-the-scenes look at the group’s virtuosity, vintage musical instruments, and more than 60,000 period band arrangements.

1930s: The Magic of Mahalia
The Brianna Thomas Quintet
Thursday, July 20, 2017
8 pm
The “best young straight-ahead jazz singer of her generation” (Wall Street Journal), draws on two titans of Gospel, Mahalia Jackson and Thomas Dorsey, in this modern take on the remarkable songs that reshaped America's sacred music. In the 1930s, Thomas Dorsey, "the father of black Gospel music," met the Queen of Gospel, Mahalia Jackson, and began a 14-year musical and touring partnership. Jackson performed Dorsey’s most revered songs, including "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" (a favorite of Martin Luther King, Jr.) and "Peace in the Valley," songs that she would keep in her repertoire for her entire career. Meanwhile, Dorsey was composing a songbook that would become a bedrock of modern Gospel music.
The brilliant young vocalist Brianna Thomas follows in the footsteps of these musical masters, leading her ensemble in a passionate tribute to this emotional and uplifting repertoire.
“Brianna Thomas is the complete package.” (Dan Bilawsky, All About Jazz)

1940s: Yardbird to Freebird
Walking Distance
Thursday, July 27, 2017
8 pm
Sharing their passion for bebop and the music of master saxophonist Charlie “Yardbird” Parker, the ever-dynamic and vanguard jazz quartet Walking Distance present this Catskill Jazz Factory debut of their upcoming sophomore release, Freebird.By stretching, flipping, reversing, and reorganizing Parker’s compositions, the top young players of Walking Distance (tenor sax, alto sax, double bass, and drums) have created uniquely original pieces that retain the essential spirit and energy of Parker’s masterpieces, infused with contemporary flair. Pianist Orrin Evans, a hard-charging force in the jazz world and bandleader of more than 25 albums, joins this reflection on Parker’s towering legacy. As Miles Davis once said, "You can tell the history of jazz in four words: Louis Armstrong. Charlie Parker.
“Count the young, open-spirited band Walking Distance as an impressive contender in a new crop of ensembles representing the contemporary acoustic jazz aesthetic … a creative firebrand of a band worth hearing and following.” (DownBeat Magazine)
