CCS Bard, Classroom 102
From Visual AIDS:
“The seven short videos range in subject from anti-stigma work in New Orleans to public sex culture in Chicago, highlighting pioneering AIDS activism and staging intergenerational conversations. Recalling Gregg Bordowitz’s reminder that “THE AIDS CRISIS IS STILL BEGINNING,”* the video program resists narratives of resolution or conclusion, considering the continued urgency of HIV/AIDS in the contemporary moment while revisiting resonant cultural histories from the past three decades.
Visual AIDS is a New York–based nonprofit that utilizes art to fight AIDS by provoking dialogue, supporting HIV+ artists, and preserving a legacy, because AIDS is not over. In 1989, Visual AIDS organized the first Day Without Art, a call to the art world for mourning and action in response to the AIDS crisis. For Day With(out) Art’s 30th year, over 100 institutions worldwide will screen STILL BEGINNING, recognizing the important and necessary work of artists, activists, and cultural workers who have responded to AIDS while emphasizing the persistent presence of the epidemic.
This year’s program will be screened at CCS Bard on December 1 at 2:00pm, and December 4 at 12:00pm, both in Classroom 102. Free admission. Seating is first-come, first-served.
*Gregg Bordowitz, The AIDS Crisis Is Still Beginning (2019) was recently on view at the Art Institute of Chicago. Hear Bordowitz discuss the work here.

EMPAC/RPI CURTIS R. PRIEM EXPERIMENTAL MEDIA AND PERFORMING ARTS CENTER at Rensselaer
Bard College Electronic Music faculty Sarah Hennies performs an evening of her work for solo percussion and electronics featuring her works Falsetto and Fleas. Through slowly evolving textures, Hennies’s music opens up a space where small changes become events. Her music often explores the act of performance, whether through showing the amount of energy it takes to maintain a constant appearance in front of others, the exhaustion of maintaining a sound once it has been established, or the vulnerability of having one’s every small move amplified through observation.
Working with both traditional orchestral percussion instruments and found objects, Hennies challenges rigid definitions by relating the structure of her work to themes of queer and trans identity, love and intimacy. Hennies has mentioned in interviews that percussionists are unique in that they don’t have a specific instrument. Their identity and role changes constantly with the context of different pieces and even within a single piece. The standard definition of a musician identified by their instrument does not hold.
In Hennies’s performance, listeners and performers are encouraged to enter a shared space that reflects everyday life. Her music begins to expose the exhaustion and virtuosity of maintaining even simple actions. A gentle sound, such as the ringing of a small bell, is sustained beyond virtuosity to expose the exhaustion of maintaining even simple actions that are thought of as societal norms. As these sounds are challenged by the addition of other actions, Hennies’s performance becomes more and more mesmerizing: an act of determination.

From the Collection: First Year Practicum 2019 is comprised of four exhibitions each drawn from the Marieluise Hessel Collection. Curated in groups by the fourteen M.A. candidates in the Class of 2021, the exhibitions examine the museum’s collection through themes of migration, race, transformation, and pain.
Extending from the Audrey and Sydney Irmas Reception Atrium to the entry gallery in the CCS Bard Galleries, But the skin of the earth is seamless proposes an approach to global migration that focuses on its generative and creative potential,. In the following gallery, White people are ____asks viewers to consider how whiteness has operated in the respective artist’s practices, and how their identity has been implicated, or not, in discussions of their work. Persons in the Presence of a Metamorphosis includes a diverse range of artistic approaches that grapple with various forms of transformation, emphasizing the importance of remaining receptive to change, difference, and possibility. In the final gallery, the works in throbbing_quivering_pulsing_beating give language to the sensorial dimensions and rhythmic patterns of pain and pleasure in the body.

Alternate pathways for using undergraduate psychology education and experience exist in multiple professional realms. One such pathway is in using a graduate degree in social work or psychology to transform, teach, and practice in the field of academic family medicine. Family doctors are at the forefront of research and practice in the evidence base that informs integrative healthcare, providing services ranging from care coordination to mental health—all predicated on the development of trauma-informed, culturally conscious, therapeutic relationships with their patients. This talk will provide insight into a social justice pathway and mission that hopes to help transform the future of health and mental health care.Sponsored by: Psychology Program.

Dr. Ashley Oliver, a medical resident and social justice advocate, will give a talk entitled “Medicine from Without and Within: A Series of Arguments about the Role of the Liberal Arts Education in Diversifying Modes of Analysis and Knowledge and in Advancing Social Justice.”
Abstract
What is a “healing imperative”? Dr. Oliver will use her autobiography to trace an arc of striving for social justice in medicine. She will begin by describing the ways that medicine has been studied from without, as part of liberal arts curricula, and argue that institutions like Bard are well equipped to help students and their faculty open new frontiers to our understanding of what medicine is, as practiced, and to imagine what it could be. She will then consider a particularly alarming challenge to the health-care landscape coming from within: the rapidly growing integration of bioinformation collected from private companies into the traditional methods by which medicine predicts and even molds future behavior. Because of the drive to improve diagnosis and efficacy of treatment, including the prerogatives of “precision medicine,” we risk reinforcing or possibly even worsening inequities of power and health care domestically and internationally. Dr. Oliver will close with a plea for us to continue to nurture minds both within and without medicine in order to better analyze the complex landscape of the healing imperative.

Olin Humanities, Room 102
The festival Adi Atti Varadar Utsava is celebrated only once in 40 years. At that time, the original wooden image of Viṣṇu, the main deity of the Varadarāja temple in the South Indian city Kanchipuram, emerges from the huge temple tank and is venerated for 40 days, only to be immersed again in the temple tank for another 40 years. I will talk about the different myths connected to this second statue of Viṣṇu and trace the historical roots of this event, which in summer 2019 attracted more than one million visitors from all over India.

Bard Farm
LAB Commission / World Premiere
“The U.S.-Mexican border es una herida abierta where the Third World grates against the first and bleeds.” — Gloria Anzaldúa, Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza, 1987.
Naturalized Borders (to Gloria) is the first iteration of a multifaceted, interactive land art and community-based project, including a 72-foot-long line of indigenous crops (corn, beans, and squash, known as “the three sisters”) planted in the shape of the U.S.-Mexico border line on the Bard College Farm. It includes the harvesting, sharing, and clearing of crops and land; a mobile paleta cart-turned-drawing studio upon which persons of any background are invited to memorialize real or imagined borders; and the documentation and archive from various stages of the project. Continuing the legacy of Chicana feminist writer Gloria E. Anzaldúa, the work seeks to unearth histories of immigration, labor rights, borders, land sovereignty, and systemic oppression.
Naturalized Borders (to Gloria) was created in collaboration with the Bard Farm (Rebecca Yoshino, Farm Coordinator) and The Center for the Study of Land, Air and Water, with the participation of students Mary Elizabeth Klein Meghan Mercier, Kaitlyn McClelland, Gabrielle Reyes, Alexi Piirimae, Midori Barandiaran, and Austin Sumlin.Sponsored by: Fisher Center LAB.

1619: A Commemoration in Sound is a remembrance event to mark the 400th anniversary of the first arrival of enslaved people from Africa in the North American British Colonies—the beginning of slavery in what would become the United States of America.
African descendants’ virtuosic negotiations with Western tonality and forms, as well as cosmopolitan explorations of different sounds, aesthetics, and cultures, have shaped vital contributions to the art, music, and dance of America. Dr. Whitney Slaten, Assistant Professor of Music, brings together virtuosic jazz artist T.K. Blue, choreographer and Visiting Artist in Dance Souleymane Badolo, and lauded illustrator and Dutchess County resident James Ransome for an exploration of history, memory, legacy, and gestures between the U.S. and Africa.
Presented in partnership with the Difference and Media Project, the Office of Inclusive Excellence, and the Ethnomusicology Area, with support from The Music Program, Historical Studies, Art History, Africana Studies, American Studies, The Arts Division, the Center for Civic Engagement, and the Center for Experimental Humanities.Sponsored by: Fisher Center.

Screening in Honor of the 30th Annual Day With(out) Art: Still Beginning
Wednesday, December 4, 2019
12–2 pm
CCS Bard, Classroom 102CCS Bard is proud to partner with Visual AIDS for the 30th annual Day With(out) Art by presenting STILL BEGINNING, a program of seven newly commissioned videos responding to the ongoing HIV/AIDS epidemic by Shanti Avirgan, Nguyen Tan Hoang, Carl George, Viva Ruiz, Iman Shervington, Jack Waters / Victor F. M. Torres, and Derrick Woods-Morrow.

Falsetto
Wednesday, December 4, 2019
7:30–9:30 pm
EMPAC/RPI CURTIS R. PRIEM EXPERIMENTAL MEDIA AND PERFORMING ARTS CENTER at RensselaerBard College Electronic Music faculty Sarah Hennies performs an evening of her work for solo percussion and electronics featuring her works Falsetto and Fleas.

Medicine from Without and Within: A Talk by Ashley Oliver, MD
Friday, December 6, 2019
3–5 pm
Olin Humanities, Room 102Dr.

Fisher Center, Sosnoff TheaterFeaturing
Dr. Whitney Slaten
T.K. Blue Quintet
Souleymane Badolo / Kongo Ba Téria
and the art of James Ransome
