Formal semantics and formal pragmatics as they have developed over the last 50 years have been shaped by fruitful interdisciplinary collaboration among linguists, philosophers, and logicians, among others, affecting and affected by developments in linguistics, philosophy, cognitive science, and computational linguistics. As part of a larger project on the history of formal semantics, in this talk I’ll emphasize aspects of the pre-history and history of formal semantics that concern the relation between language and logic.
