Biography: Kirin Wachter-Grene (B.A., University of Arizona, Tucson; M.A., The Graduate Center, CUNY; Ph.D., University of Washington, Seattle) is a full-time Language Lecturer in New York University’s Expository Writing Program. She holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of Washington (UW) with a focus in 19th-21st century African American literature and gender and sexuality studies, and an MA in Liberal Studies from The Graduate Center, CUNY. In 2015 she received a Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award from UW for her work as an Acting Instructor of literature. Currently she is working on her first book project, titled Into the Scorpion Garden: Samuel R. Delany and Transgressive African American Literature, which both argues for black, queer writer and critic Delany’s centrality to African American literature, and applies what she terms “Delanyian theory” to read the work of his African American contemporaries in innovative, counter-intuitive manners. She has articles and reviews published in African American Review, The Black Scholar, Callaloo, The International Journal of Diverse Identities, and InVisible Culture, and a book chapter on Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower published in Apocalyptic Projections (Cambridge Scholars Press, 2015).
