Contact Tracing Opportunities and Volunteering

Contact Tracing Opportunities and Volunteering

What is Contact Tracing?
Contact tracing is the process of identifying and calling people who may have come into contact with people infected with Covid-19 and the collection of information that will help prevent the spread of disease. Governor Cuomo has stated that he is "raising an army" of contact tracers in New York State (NYS). This is an extraordinarily important project enabling the collection and analysis of critical data as our communities find ways to manage the disease. Identifying people willing to either apply for or volunteer for contact tracing positions is one of the most critical steps toward reaching NYS requirements for regional openings.

Contact Tracing Opportunities and Volunteering

How can I get involved?
As part of the process of managing the COVID-19 pandemic, NYS has put a call out to county governments to recruit volunteers for contact tracing activities and announced paid positions through NYS.

There are two ways to get involved in this effort.

First, paid positions are available through NYS for anyone who is seeking employment.  More information here.

Second, Ulster County is seeking volunteers who are interested in getting trained in contact tracing.  Those who get involved, will be expected to complete mandated state training sessions, which are planned to be conducted virtually. The County has created a very short survey to register (see below).
The County is gauging interest and collecting names by noon on Monday, May 11 but feel free to sign up beyond that time.

Kingston Mutual Aid Network

The Kingston Mutual Aid Network is a place for community members to come together and support one another. We all have needs and we all have ways we can support one another (such as a car to deliver groceries, meal prep skills, or emotional support). Here’s how to get involved:

  • The KMA Network is looking for folks to sign up and indicate what type of support/resources they can provide (so they can be matched to an incoming need).
Click to join the KMA Network and indicate the resources you’re able to offer
  • Another big need for the KMA Network is for volunteers to take on shifts as moderators. During their shift, moderators will review incoming requests from a Google form and pair this with volunteers who have filled out a separate Google form based on the specific needs and offers. Training will be provided.
Click to learn more and sign-up for the Moderator role

Project Manna

Shopping Support for Seniors and Others
Volunteer for Project Manna

Project Manna was conceived by three nonprofit organizations working together to help coordinate grocery shopping; delivery and prescription pick-up; and delivery for senior citizens, disabled, and immunocompromised people in and around Kingston so as to keep them safe at home. Hand in Hand, Jewish Family Services, and Jewish Federation of UC want to keep our vulnerable population at home during this pandemic by providing a way to receive groceries without them needing to venture out and possibly contract the COVID-19 virus.

Project Manna needs volunteers for: 1) grocery shopping/delivery, 2) curbside pick-up/delivery of groceries, 3) pick-up/delivery of prescriptions, 4) placing orders online for those who do not have an internet connection, 5) helping to coordinate volunteer shoppers.

Virtual Civic Engagement

Community Needs and Opportunities
The Center for Civic Engagement is working to organize virtual volunteer opportunities with local organizations such as nursing homes, so students can Skype in musical performances to residents and engage remotely in other ways. If you’re interested in participating in virtual civic engagement, please fill out this brief form regarding community needs and opportunities to help or email civic@bard.edu.

Support the Bard Student Emergency Fund

The Bard Student Emergency Fund supports students requiring materials or resources to complete their studies remotely. The College accepts monetary gifts for the Fund as well as donations of new Chromebooks or gently used laptop computers that have been factory reset or that have operating systems freshly reinstalled. Laptop donations can dropped off at the Anne Cox Chambers Alumni/ae Center.

This fund helps to ensure that all Bard students can continue the semester, regardless of circumstance. Please consider making a gift today.
