Biography:

B.A., Williams College; M.F.A., Columbia University. Poet, translator, critic. Translation of the complete poems of Ingeborg Bachmann, Songs in Flight (Marsilio, 1994), selected as an outstanding translation of 1994 by American Literary Translators Association; also translated two novel fragments by Bachmann, The Book of Franza and Requiem for Fanny Goldmann (Northwestern University Press, 1999), and an expanded edition of her poems, Darkness Spoken (Zephyr Press, 2006); and novels by Alois Hotschnig, Leonardo's Hands (University of Nebraska Press, 1999), and H. G. Adler, The Journey (Random House, 2008) and Panorama (Random House, 2011); Bernd Stiegler’s Traveling in Place: A History of Armchair Travel (University of Chicago Press, 2013); and edited essays by H. G. Adler, Nach der Befreiung (Konstanz University Press, 2013). Books of poetry include The View We’re Granted (Johns Hopkins, 2012), Augustine’s Vision (New American Press, 2010), After Homer (George Braziller Publishers, 2002) and What She Knew (Orchises Press, 1998). Articles and poems in American Scholar, New Republic, New Criterion, Paris Review, New York Times Book Review, many other journals and magazines. Recipient of Sheila Motton Best Book Award from the New England Poetry Club (2013), Marbach Fellowship (2012), DAAD Faculty Fellowship (2011), New American Press Chapbook Award (2010), Stover Prize in Poetry (2007), Austrian Translation Award (2007), Berlin Prize (2005), and fellowships to the James Merrill House, Yaddo, Millay, and MacDowell colonies. Has taught at Williams College, North Adams State College, Hiram College. Faculty, Bard College at Simon's Rock: The Early College (1988– ). At Bard since 2007.

  • Research Interests: Post-war German Literature. Contemporary Poetry & Fiction.
  • Teaching Interests: Translation, Post-war German Literature, Creative Writing, Modern and Contemporary Poetry.
  • Other Interests: First-year Seminar

Highlights:

2009-09-15 — Publication
Peter Filkins was named a Top Ten Finalist in the Narrative Magazine First Annual Poetry Contest. His poem "The Wild Boar" will appear in an upcoming issue. He also has new poems in The Iowa Review, Salamander, and The American Arts Quarterly.
