Biography:

Lloyd Hazvineyi is an environmental historian with a focus on African history. A Zimbabwe native, Hazvineyi received his PhD at University of the Witswatersrand, where his dissertation addressed “Forced Removals, Migration, and Human-Nature Relations in Colonial Buhera, Zimbabwe, 1925–1980.” He has taught or served as lecturer at Catholic University of Zimbabwe and at Wits, where he was also a research fellow in the Emancipatory Futures Research Program in the School of Social Sciences. Courses taught include History of Sub-Saharan Africa from 1500, Global Encounters and Contemporary Realities, Critical Thinking, Industrialization of the World, Women in African History, and Introduction to Theory and Method in History, among others. Publications include coauthored sections in Guerrilla Radios in Southern Africa (Wits University Press, 2021) and The Life and Music of Oliver Mtukudzi: Reconstruction and Identity (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022); and newspaper opinion pieces in the Sunday Mail, “Fossil Fuels: The Roots of Climate Change” and “Beaming from the Trenches to Independence.” He was also a freelance researcher for Johannesburg-based Africa Check.
