B.A., University of Colorado; graduate studies, Danforth Fellow, Yale University. Novels: Come Sunday (1988), The Almanac Branch (1991), Trinity Fields (1995), Giovanni's Gift (1997), Ariel's Crossing (2002), The Diviner's Tale (2011), and The Forgers (2014). Short fiction: Fall of the Birds (2011), The Uninnocent (2011), and The Nature of My Inheritance (2014). Poetry collections: Posthumes: Selected Poems 1977–1982, A Bestiary (1991). Children's book: Didn't Didn't Do It (with Gahan Wilson, 2007). Editor of numerous books including The Selected Poems of Kenneth Rexroth (1984), World Outside the Window: The Selected Essays of Kenneth Rexroth (1987), The New Gothic (1991; with Patrick McGrath), The Complete Poems of Kenneth Rexroth (2002; with Sam Hamill), and The Inevitable: Contemporary Writers Confront Death (2011; with David Shields. Founding editor, Conjunctions (1981– ). Literary executor of Kenneth Rexroth. Recipient, Guggenheim Fellowship in fiction (2007); PEN/Nora Magid Award for excellence in literary journal editing (2007); O.
