Job-Finding Tips
A resume is a good document to have available to send to prospective employers. Even if you have not worked, you can indicate clubs, organizations, and special interests!
We encourage those students with transportation to view Handshake for potential off-campus positions that might be available in nearby Red Hook and Tivoli.

Why Work Study?

Work Study eligible students get priority in hiring.
However, a work study award is not a guarantee of a job.
Questions regarding work study eligibility should be directed to Student Financial Services.

Spring: February 1
Summer: May 15

Budgeting for Student Employment

  1. Determine your budget needs for the year. This includes not only the academic year, but also intersession, the summer, and L&T.
  2. Quantify in hours per week how much time it will take the average student to accomplish the responsibilities you will be assigning them.
  3. When you have determined the nature of the work, job description, and the time needed to accomplish it, multiply the number of hours per week by 50% of minimum wage, assuming that the student you hire qualifies for work-study funding. This product will then need to be multiplied by the number of weeks you want the student to work for you. This total will give you what you need to have in your budget line in order to cover the cost of paying the student.
  4. In order to determine if the student you are hiring has qualified for federal work-study funding as well as the maximum amount they can earn in a given academic year, contact us at the Student Employment Office at ext. 4796 or email [email protected]. Remember that for any student who does not qualify for work-study funding, the College and your budget will incur the full cost per hour of this student's hourly wage. You also need to figure into your calculations that work-study funds are not available during the summer months, including during the Language and Thinking Program. In addition, the summer wage maybe more than minimum wage—so you'll need to take these factors into account when coming up with the total amount.
The minimum wage in New York State is $15.50 per hour effective January 1, 2025.
Note: Departmental responsibility is 50% of wages for students who are work study eligible
