CCS Bard Galleries All Manner of Experiments: Legacies of the Baghdad Modern Art Group is the first exhibition to contextualize and historicize an essential chapter in Arab modern and contemporary art. This in-depth presentation of the Baghdad Modern Art Group, which was founded in 1951 and remained a creative force through the early 1970s, presents a spirited picture of multiple generations of artists working together to forge a new and distinct aesthetic that captured the dynamism and hope of postcolonial life in Iraq. Hessel Museum of Art Stan Douglas: Ghostlight will be the artist’s first survey in the U.S. in over 20 years and will chart his global influence and innovation across 40 works from the 1990s to the present. The exhibition will present the North American premiere of an immersive, multi-channel video installation that revisits D.W. Griffith’s 1915 film “The Birth of a Nation” framed by a selection of works that explore topics ranging from settler colonialism in the Americas, to the legacies of transatlantic slavery, to modern movements for liberation in Africa and Europe. Douglas’ deeply researched and longtime commitment to these histories provide an expansive view of the present, one that sheds light on moments of breakdown and chaos that attend societies in upheaval.

The Vinyasa segment moves at a moderate pace allowing alignment cues to be woven in. A slower flow is accessible for newer students and allows more experienced students to refine their poses.

Adrienne Truscott’s 24-Minute Misinterpretation of Song, Time, and Jeenyus

Form-busting performance artist Adrienne Truscott returns to the Spiegeltent as the one and lonely Païge Trnr, the forgotten cabaret legend and figment of her own imagination. Joined by an all-lady band (musical director Viva DeConcini on guitar, Brittany Anjou on keys, and Bernice “Boom Boom” Brooks on drums), Païge is here to misinterpret and pervert some of the best and worst songs ever written. Païge will bring you to your feet (or knees) whether you like it or not, and whether she has autonomy over her body and her cocktails or not. Come! It’ll be so much pun.

Online Event We're reading The Life of the Mind, Hannah Arendt’s unfinished final work. In it, she focuses on three basic mental activities—thinking, willing, and judging—and their relation to the world of appearances and to the human capacity for moral and political action. The new critical edition makes available in print, for the first time, the text of the typescripts as Arendt left them, complemented by a wealth of previously unpublished material, detailed annotations, and extensive scholarly commentary. We will also be referring to Mary McCarthy's edition for increased accessibility.

Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks (Topdog/Underdog) has drawn inspiration from Scott Joplin’s 1910 ragtime opera Treemonisha to create a magical, hilarious, and timely fable about a young woman who leads her community out of adversity and into a new way of being.
This staged reading of Suzan-Lori’s libretto for Jubilee, commissioned by Fisher Center LAB, offers audiences a rare opportunity to engage directly with the development of a major new musical, which the Fisher Center will premiere as a full production in the near future.
After an exhilarating Spiegeltent debut last summer, composer, drummer, and the “Hendrix of dhol” (Manchester Salon) Sunny Jain returns for a second season. In Sunny Jain’s performances, trance beats coalesce with ethereal soundscapes, creating a meditative, transcendent evening of music. His music is a celebration of cultural diaspora: deep-rooted tradition that ripples outward, changing—and being changed by—the cultures that it touches.

Replete with dancing bears and bags of luck, and set on the day after the Emancipation Proclamation, Jubilee joyfully asks what the world might become when all people are truly free. Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks (Topdog/Underdog) has drawn inspiration from Scott Joplin’s 1910 ragtime opera Treemonisha to create a magical, hilarious, and timely fable about a young woman who leads her community out of adversity and into a new way of being.
This staged reading of Suzan-Lori’s libretto for Jubilee, commissioned by Fisher Center LAB, offers audiences a rare opportunity to engage directly with the development of a major new musical, which the Fisher Center will premiere as a full production in the near future.
Canadian Inuk singer-songwriter Elisapie blends modernity and tradition in her captivating music. Her unconditional attachment to her territory and her language, Inuktitut, remains at the core of her creative journey. Elisapie’s latest release, Inuktitut (winner of the 2024 Juno Award for Contemporary Indigenous Artist of the Year and a 2024 Polaris Music Prize finalist), reinvigorates the poetry of ten rock and pop hits with the raw, intimate sounds of her mother tongue. Joined by a stellar lineup of Montreal’s premier indie and folk talent, Elisapie brings her culture to life with bold, singular artistry.

This in-depth presentation of the Baghdad Modern Art Group, which was founded in 1951 and remained a creative force through the early 1970s, presents a spirited picture of multiple generations of artists working together to forge a new and distinct aesthetic that captured the dynamism and hope of postcolonial life in Iraq. Griffith’s 1915 film “The Birth of a Nation” framed by a selection of works that explore topics ranging from settler colonialism in the Americas, to the legacies of transatlantic slavery, to modern movements for liberation in Africa and Europe. Online Event We're reading The Life of the Mind, Hannah Arendt’s unfinished final work. In it, she focuses on three basic mental activities—thinking, willing, and judging—and their relation to the world of appearances and to the human capacity for moral and political action. The new critical edition makes available in print, for the first time, the text of the typescripts as Arendt left them, complemented by a wealth of previously unpublished material, detailed annotations, and extensive scholarly commentary. We will also be referring to Mary McCarthy's edition for increased accessibility.

Online Event We're reading The Life of the Mind, Hannah Arendt’s unfinished final work. In it, she focuses on three basic mental activities—thinking, willing, and judging—and their relation to the world of appearances and to the human capacity for moral and political action. The new critical edition makes available in print, for the first time, the text of the typescripts as Arendt left them, complemented by a wealth of previously unpublished material, detailed annotations, and extensive scholarly commentary. We will also be referring to Mary McCarthy's edition for increased accessibility.

Form-busting performance artist Adrienne Truscott returns to the Spiegeltent as the one and lonely Païge Trnr, the forgotten cabaret legend and figment of her own imagination. Joined by an all-lady band (musical director Viva DeConcini on guitar, Brittany Anjou on keys, and Bernice “Boom Boom” Brooks on drums), Païge is here to misinterpret and pervert some of the best and worst songs ever written. Païge will bring you to your feet (or knees) whether you like it or not, and whether she has autonomy over her body and her cocktails or not. Come! It’ll be so much pun.

Online Event We're reading The Life of the Mind, Hannah Arendt’s unfinished final work. In it, she focuses on three basic mental activities—thinking, willing, and judging—and their relation to the world of appearances and to the human capacity for moral and political action. The new critical edition makes available in print, for the first time, the text of the typescripts as Arendt left them, complemented by a wealth of previously unpublished material, detailed annotations, and extensive scholarly commentary. We will also be referring to Mary McCarthy's edition for increased accessibility.

Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks (Topdog/Underdog) has drawn inspiration from Scott Joplin’s 1910 ragtime opera Treemonisha to create a magical, hilarious, and timely fable about a young woman who leads her community out of adversity and into a new way of being.
This staged reading of Suzan-Lori’s libretto for Jubilee, commissioned by Fisher Center LAB, offers audiences a rare opportunity to engage directly with the development of a major new musical, which the Fisher Center will premiere as a full production in the near future.
After an exhilarating Spiegeltent debut last summer, composer, drummer, and the “Hendrix of dhol” (Manchester Salon) Sunny Jain returns for a second season. In Sunny Jain’s performances, trance beats coalesce with ethereal soundscapes, creating a meditative, transcendent evening of music. His music is a celebration of cultural diaspora: deep-rooted tradition that ripples outward, changing—and being changed by—the cultures that it touches.

Canadian Inuk singer-songwriter Elisapie blends modernity and tradition in her captivating music. Her unconditional attachment to her territory and her language, Inuktitut, remains at the core of her creative journey. Elisapie’s latest release, Inuktitut (winner of the 2024 Juno Award for Contemporary Indigenous Artist of the Year and a 2024 Polaris Music Prize finalist), reinvigorates the poetry of ten rock and pop hits with the raw, intimate sounds of her mother tongue. Online Event We're reading The Life of the Mind, Hannah Arendt’s unfinished final work. In it, she focuses on three basic mental activities—thinking, willing, and judging—and their relation to the world of appearances and to the human capacity for moral and political action. The new critical edition makes available in print, for the first time, the text of the typescripts as Arendt left them, complemented by a wealth of previously unpublished material, detailed annotations, and extensive scholarly commentary. We will also be referring to Mary McCarthy's edition for increased accessibility.

At the Summer Jazz Academy Combo Showcase, small groups of the world’s most talented jazz students play music from a range of composers and styles. Hessel Museum of Art Stan Douglas: Ghostlight will be the artist’s first survey in the U.S. in over 20 years and will chart his global influence and innovation across 40 works from the 1990s to the present. Griffith’s 1915 film “The Birth of a Nation” framed by a selection of works that explore topics ranging from settler colonialism in the Americas, to the legacies of transatlantic slavery, to modern movements for liberation in Africa and Europe. Douglas’ deeply researched and longtime commitment to these histories provide an expansive view of the present, one that sheds light on moments of breakdown and chaos that attend societies in upheaval.

CCS Bard Galleries All Manner of Experiments: Legacies of the Baghdad Modern Art Group is the first exhibition to contextualize and historicize an essential chapter in Arab modern and contemporary art. This in-depth presentation of the Baghdad Modern Art Group, which was founded in 1951 and remained a creative force through the early 1970s, presents a spirited picture of multiple generations of artists working together to forge a new and distinct aesthetic that captured the dynamism and hope of postcolonial life in Iraq. This past year, the Hannah Arendt Center reached more people than ever. Our Virtual Reading Group draws over 100 participants each week from around the world and is free for members and Bard students, faculty, and staff. (Our next read is Hannah Arendt's On Revolution, starting in September). Our podcast surpassed 100,000 downloads and published our 100th episode (and is available on your favorite listening platform). Our YouTube channel grew to 13,000+ subscribers and we've upped our game on YouTube Shorts with the help of some talented students. And thanks to support from our members, we funded nearly 20 paid Student Fellowships for Bard College students!
