A World Safe for White Democracy: Colonial Southeast Asia and the Making of the US Led Liberal International Order
Amoz JY Hor, Assistant Professor of Politics and Asian Studies, Centre College
Friday, May 1, 2026
11:30 am – 1 pm
Olin Humanities, Room 205This talk offers a revisionist account of the formation of the U.S.-led international order by centering the colonial political economy of Southeast Asia in three key moments: US entry into the Pacific War, the formation of NATO, and the perceived absence of a NATO equivalent in Asia. Despite its significance, Southeast Asia is rarely foregrounded in International Relations accounts of global order. Yet both historiography and primary sources reveal that the region’s colonial political economy was central to U.S. foreign policy in Europe, Northeast Asia, and the South Pacific. By recentering Southeast Asia, the talk argues that the self-characterized “liberal international order” was not simply illiberal or hypocritical; rather, it is more accurately understood through what Charles Mills terms “racialized liberalism”—the belief that only white people are fully capable of democratic self-governance, making white freedoms especially sacred. More broadly, the talk suggests that globalizing International Relations requires more than incorporating non-Western cases or theories; it demands a shift in analytical vantage point—reconsidering where we look from, not just what we look at.
This talk is part of the Politics Assembly, a new weekly workshop in the Politics program for students and faculty to gather to discuss.

Film Screening: Unravel by Mona Benyamin
Part of the Thesis Exhibition of the MA in Human Rights & the Arts 2026
Saturday, May 2, 2026
2–3 pm
Preston TheaterUnravel is the artistic component of Mona Benyamin's hybrid thesis project for the MA in Human Rights and the Arts. The film explores repetition and return as intertwined material and psychological forces shaping the Palestinian experience. It features two synchronized videos bound by a shared soundtrack—a choral adaptation of Maurice Ravel’s Boléro. In the first video, horror cinema tropes structure a narrative featuring the artist’s parents, a senior Palestinian couple living under occupation, who are chased by an unidentified voyeur up the stairwell of their home. The second video documents a choir performing a reworked Boléro that modulates and grows in intensity. Voices replace the traditional instrumental original of the notoriously repetitive piece, singing variations of “ah”, which alludes to the tradition of Ahaat, an Arabic vocal technique that conveys affirmation, sorrow, longing and exhaustion. Across both videos, repetition shifts from a stabilizing force into a source of anxiety, transforming familiarity into disorientation and revealing its oppressive potential. This work forms part of a broader research project examining the relationship between musical repetition and subjection, and music’s capacity to produce both constructive and destructive affects.

Rome's Jewish Queen: the Story of Berenice
Bruce Chilton, Bernard Iddings Bell Professor of Philosophy and Religion; Director, Institute of Advanced Theology
Monday, May 4, 2026
12:30–1:30 pm
Bard HallBerenice (born circa 28) was the most notorious Jewish woman in the Roman Empire of her time. Multiple marriages, rumors of incestuous relations with her brother (Agrippa II of the Herodian dynasty), and her scandalous liaison with Titus, the Roman general and emperor‑to‑be, guaranteed Berenice’s celebrity. This reputation does not, however, paint a complete portrait of Berenice, nor does it capture her significance. Her political acumen was as effective as it would become legendary. The great‑granddaughter of Herod the Great and the daughter of King Agrippa I, she promoted the family’s unusual version of Judaism as well as its outsized ambitions. Berenice was a pivotal figure in Agrippa II’s advance in imperial preferment; played a crucial role during the Jewish‑Roman war; and, as consort to Titus, supported his father, Vespasian, in his accession to the role of emperor.

Tuesday, May 5, 2026
7–9 pm
Preston TheaterFOOTNOTE is the tale of a great rivalry between a father and son, two professors, who have both dedicated their lives to work in Talmudic Studies. The father, Eliezer, is a stubborn purist who fears the establishment and has never been recognized for his work. His son, Uriel, is an up-and-coming star in the field, who appears to feed on accolades, endlessly seeking recognition.
Then one day, the tables turn. When Eliezer learns that he is to be awarded the Israel Prize, the most valuable honor for scholarship in the country, his vanity and desperate need for validation are exposed. His son, Uriel, is thrilled to see his father's achievements finally recognized but, in a darkly funny twist, is forced to choose between the advancement of his own career and his father's. Will he sabotage his father's glory?

CCS Bard Method Camp: Research
Friday, May 8, 2026
11 am – 4 pm
CCS Bard, Collection Teaching GalleryCCS Bard Method Camp: Research inaugurates a new annual symposium at the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College dedicated to examining the foundational practices that shape curatorial work and its adjacent fields. Conceived as a space for reflection on method rather than outcome, this first edition focuses on research—not as a neutral or preliminary stage, but as a situated, generative, and often unruly practice that underpins artistic, curatorial, and scholarly production.
Across disciplines, research names a wide spectrum of activities: observation, collection, speculation, verification, immersion, and translation. It may unfold systematically or intuitively, collaboratively or in isolation; it may take the form of archival excavation, fieldwork, embodied inquiry, or conceptual construction. Rather than stabilizing these differences, Method Camp approaches research as a set of evolving practices shaped by context, urgency, and desire. What does it mean to begin with a question? How does a line of inquiry take form, and for whom? At what point does research become legible—or deliberately resist legibility?
This one-day symposium, organized by Mariano López Seoane, consists of two 90-minute panels bringing together artists, curators, and scholars. The program foregrounds case-based reflections on process, offering insight into the intellectual, material, and affective dimensions of research across fields.
Full list of speakers, schedule, and bios here.

An Alpine Symphony
After a string of successful tone poems, An Alpine Symphony was Richard Strauss’s first such composition after nearly a dozen years of focusing on opera. Written for a massive orchestra that includes such rarities as the heckelphone, thunder sheets, a wind machine, and other unusual effects, this gloriously opulent masterpiece takes listeners through the ascent and descent of a mountain in the Alps, with meadows, streams, storms, and vistas along the way. Also on the program are Strauss’s Burleske for Piano and Orchestra, performed with Blair McMillen, and the vivacious Die Tageszeiten (Times of the Day), a setting of four nature poems by Joseph von Eichendorff. Hear this program at the Fisher Center just days before TŌN performs it at Carnegie Hall.

An Alpine Symphony performed with members of the Bard College Conservatory Orchestra

Wednesday, May 13, 2026
5–6 pm
Olin Language CenterOver the past two years, the language center has gradually taken shape as something our community now calls the LAB: The Center for Language, Attention, and Belonging. This semester, we have been working across languages and disciplines to explore how attention, translation, and AI are changing the way we read, write, and understand one another. Our student research team invites faculty and students to engage with our projects as part of an ongoing exchange that extends beyond presentation into conversation and shared inquiry. We will explore irreplaceable ways of being human, what gets lost in translation, and how cultural nuance might collapse under pressure. Come listen and respond to ideas that might connect to your own work and ways of thinking.

Khantshe in Amerike — An Operetta by Joseph Rumshinsky
Thursday, May 14, 2026
7–8:30 pm
Bitó Conservatory Building, Performance SpaceThe Graduate Vocal Arts Program in collaboration with the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research presents a performance of the music of Khantshe in Amerike, a 1912 operetta with music by Joseph Rumshinsky, play by Nokhem Rakov, and lyrics by Isidore Lillian.
Premiered in New York City, Khantshe in Amerike was subsequently performed around the world. The show was a turning point in Rumshinsky’s output, noted for having put “American rhythm” on the Yiddish stage for the first time according to Yiddish theater historian Zalmen Zylbercweig (1894–1972). Khantshe was also a star vehicle which marked a pivotal moment in the career of singer, actor, and impresario Bessie Thomashefsky.
Khantshe in Amerike is a musical comedy whose action revolves around an independent minded young woman named Khantshe who dresses as a man and becomes the chauffeur for the wealthy Rubin Goldhendler. The show touches on serious topics including love, gender, women's suffrage, and the changing social status of women in turn-of-the-century America.

Hannah Arendt in Hamburg
with Natan Sznaider
Wednesday, May 20, 2026
12 pm
Online EventIn 1959, Hannah Arendt was invited to Hamburg to receive the Lessing Prize. Did she even want to accept it? As a Jew, she could not refuse the prize, but neither could she accept it as a German. So in her acceptance speech she radically reformulated what the Lessing Prize meant. Invited as a humanist, she spoke as a Jew. In her speech, identity becomes a political fact, one that she then brings onto the stage of the award ceremony itself. We carry within us personal, familial, and collective histories, and it is precisely these histories that ultimately shape our political passions.
All of this lies openly concealed within Hannah Arendt’s now iconic Lessing Prize acceptance speech. The Jew had indeed returned—but not the
Enlightenment-minded German who now happened to live in New York City and to whom a prize had been offered. Rather, it was a Jew who knew that she was also speaking before those who, only shortly before, had sought to destroy her. Her speech stands as a paradigmatic intervention in contemporary debates about particularism and universalism, and it should also be considered as a point of reference for thinking through those debates.
Natan Sznaider is Professor emeritus of Sociology at the Academic College of Tel Aviv-Yaffo. His research focuses on the theory of sociology, globalization, and memory culture. Born in Germany, he emigrated to Israel in 1974. Most recently, he co-authored a play about Hannah Arendt and the Lessing Prize: Niemandes Schwester. Natan Sznaider lives in Tel Aviv.
This event is organized by The Lessing Workshop.
