The Montgomery Place grounds are open to the public daily from sunrise to sunset. Visitors are free to enjoy the lawns for strolling and picnicking, and are invited to walk through the formal gardens and explore four maintained walking trails. The Saw Kill Trail, South Woods Trail, Morning Walk Trail, and West Lawn Trail weave paths through the property, encircling the mansion and formal gardens. The South Woods Trail leads through the old growth forest to the Hudson River, while the Saw Kill Trail leads to the picturesque Saw Kill Creek, which is believed to be the site of one of the first environmental covenants in the United States.

Exploring Our Grounds

The Montgomery Place grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset. The Saw Kill Trail, South Woods Trail, Morning Walk Trail, and West Lawn Trail weave paths through the property, encircling the mansion and formal gardens, and leading to the Hudson River and Saw Kill Creek. For more about the gardens and arboretum, contact Amy Parrella, Arboretum Director, at [email protected].

When visiting Montgomery Place, please observe our protocols:
  • Please park only in the Visitors Center parking lot.
  • Please help us maintain the beauty of these grounds by carrying out whatever you bring in.
  • Trash bins are located only at the Visitors Center.
  • Please do not disturb or collect plants, animals, or rocks.
  • When walking the trails, please remain on the paths to assist with erosion control and reduce incidents of Lyme disease.
  • Use caution: the Saw Kill Trail and South Woods Trail have uneven terrain and are occasionally steep and muddy. The West Lawn Trail features sloping terrain.
  • Montgomery Place Campus is not available as a wedding venue.
  • Pets are not allowed on the property.
  • Montgomery Place is a non-smoking campus. Please help us prevent fires and preserve this unique historic location by refraining from smoking anywhere on site.
Accessibility at Montgomery Place

Accessibility at Montgomery Place

We strive to make Montgomery Place as accessible as possible. However, due to the topography of the area and the construction of the historic buildings, parts of the campus do not meet universal accessibility requirements. The Visitors Center, main driveway, and path are wheelchair accessible for viewing the arboretum, mansion, and most of the immediate grounds in this vicinity. The Visitors Center has an accessible bathroom. Please be aware that the garden paths have loose gravel and the hiking trails have rough, steep, and hilly terrain in places.

Notices

  • Hunting Season
We do not permit hunting at Montgomery Place, but hunting is allowed on some of the abutting properties. We encourage visitors to wear brightly colored clothing when using the trails during hunting season. Please review the hunting season schedule from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
  • Refrain from Smoking
The Montgomery Place Campus is a nonsmoking property. Please help us prevent fires and preserve this unique historic location by refraining from smoking anywhere on site.
