Bard College’s Blithewood Garden and Montgomery Place Featured in the Financial Times
For the Financial Times, floral artist Ariel Dearie included both the garden at Blithewood Manor and the grounds of Montgomery Place in a piece about historical horticultural sites and beautiful spots to visit in the Hudson Valley. She discusses how her decision to work with flowers was an act of defiance against city life, how she and her family came to own property in the Hudson Valley a decade ago, and which seasons are best for visiting the historic riverfront estates of the region. “My favourites are Blithewood Manor, a Georgian revival mansion where the pillars grow with wisteria,” she writes, adding that another is “Montgomery Place for its pebbled walkways and lily pond.”
Comprising 930 acres along the Hudson River, the Bard Arboretum serves as both a place for enjoyment as well as a living classroom. Working to promote environmental and social justice, the Arboretum engages with the ecological and horticultural biodiversity of the Hudson River Valley as well as the political narratives that have shaped the land.
